Per glimpses at some open discussion over the years in various places, and I guess specific to active pedophiles instead of opportunistic molesters, there are two things going on that come to mind. One is the need to corrupt that runs counter to and thrives upon innocence and purity (to the point that a lack of resistance is a turn-off in purely power driven shit, cf. subs and kinky sex), and the other is what seems like a recognition of the sacred that becomes a moral fulcrum for anything outside of that.
The reality is something more like familial incest, where there is a golden child and victims. Perhaps one child displays something that mirrors what was lost or the thing which has become the object of fixation, maybe he (most of the firsthand accounts I read were from men who were victims, and the opportunity for molesting boys is orders of magnitude higher) doesn't fit the profile, for there is a profile, sexual predators have optimal prey of all kinds. One is raised above others and becomes a "friend" or pedagogical student. I think Michael Jackson, if you believe Macaulay Culkin, was purely that, as the only common example I can think of who displayed that kind of behavior. Others are used as bait.
The other side is either a shift into a subpersonality like psychopathic serial killers go into that seeks ecstasis and is far removed from their other mode of being, as much as poorly recovering drug addict are from the blackout flip to seeking drugs, or is the main mode of being. Your coomers and other paraphiles probably fit here as well. There's no logic or morality to it. It's a script and what comes from it is only a justification of it.
