It's not a "McMansion" or even a very nice house. It's a tract house with 2 extra bedrooms and bathrooms more than the standard floor plan for California tract houses. The majority of California tract homes are 3 + 2 and a small front and back yard; more modern ones skip the yard and just go with a deck and cement planters. No pool, no theater, no bar, probably no real yard. The only truly nice thing about it are the extra bathrooms. More modern California homes shoot for 1 bath per bedroom, although the baths may not attach to the bedrooms and at least 1 is probably a half-bath near the living room/kitchen, possibly another half-bath at the top of the stairs.

Maybe in California they do, but (I hope) most people don’t have 50 year mortgages like they do. The interest over the life of the loan will be twice that of a 30 year mortgage. I can’t imagine they have that much equity in the house even if they tried to sell it, and I can’t imagine they’d make money let alone break even if they tried to sell it.

If they had equity, it would be cancelled out by depreciation due to damage to the house. How often do you think they get off their assess and scrub those 5 bathrooms? How many times do you think you'd have to clean the carpets and scrub the walls to get the pot smell out? Pretty sure it would need a complete recarpeting, thorough scrub, wall sealer, and paint job on the inside at the very least, and in a big house like that, shit ain't cheap. Imagine the kitchen in that place.
