This is all bang-on, but sometimes all you want is the automotive equivalent of a Maytag dryer (with a similar maintenance regime).

I'm currently dailying a lifted 4WD truck and it's more entertaining as a driver's car than the last Camry I spent time behind the wheel of. Even though the limits are ridiculously low by comparison, you're at least vaguely aware of what's happening under the front tires.
I'd choose a modern Mitsubishi over a Camry if I want a simple A to B car. Toyota is getting bloated these days. For a simple putter I'd really like to get my hands on one of those new Mirages with the cute little 3 banger. It's basically half a BMW i3.

What do you guys think about a manual Volvo C30?

Small, silly looking, supposedly nice interior, some have heated seats, supposedly lots of parts compatibility with Ford. I don't think a manual is a problem at this point in my life but I'm here to be persuaded.

Extremely cheap option: Isuzu Trooper 2 door 4WD
I appreciate the rec but a 30yo beater truck isn't the missus' idea of "comfortable."

If you want something you'll enjoy driving don't touch a camry.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll scratch the Camry off the list. I've loved all of my Corollas but I've never really strayed outside of that in Toyota's lineup. Given the amount of time I'll be in the car I want it to be at least a little engaging.

Can't get any better than a E53 X5
one of those new Mirages
I was hesitant at first but the BMW actually seems like a great idea. I feel like I want to avoid a full-sized SUV but euro interior without the euro headache is hard to pass up.

The Mirages are incredibly cute too. Very Chevy Spark. How reliable do you think they'd be? I know that Mitsubishi has been in the shitter ever since they ruined the Lancer.

Mitsubishis are pretty damn boring outside of the sportier model in their line-up; due to this, they were bland back in the day and still are now. I feel that a Mirage would be adequate enough for the MPG and small form factor alone.

I was looking toward those when searching for a commuter though the ones I found on sale would need timing belts or axels replaced. Not surprising since you do need to maintain it as any other car but the motors on those things are said to be the best Volvo has made in recent years.

Least you'll get a good variety of parts from Ford if you're fine with doing work to the car. It's a pretty elegant hatchback and if not for the Civic I have, it wouldn't have been a bad choice.

They had an automatic one at the used car lot I got my xc70 from a few months ago. Its uhhh... Interesting to say the least. It technically has 4 seats but in reality I don't think you could willingly force anyone into the back seat. And the trunk is very very tiny.

But the seats are super comfortable, though in my area a lot of people didn't take care of them and many were cracked and fucked up.

I'm not sure if this will apply to the C30 also but out of the 4 XC70s I test drove 2 had suspension trouble which would have been a major repair and 2 had some minor strut trouble with the tailgate with a 3rd having recently had the strut replaced (number two fucking smacked me in the head after it opened so watch out) only mentioning since I was going for the same era and I figure they share parts.

Remember when trucks were not glorified SUVs that cost an arm or a leg? I do (based on research lmao). 6k in 1985 is ~$17k today adjusted for inflation. Cheapest truck appears to be a Ford Maverick at $26,995 for 2025 at MSRP. Average salary then was ~24k, now it's ~50k so it is roughly 25% to 50% of your income yearly now for a new truck in 40 years.

Oh and you could probably beat the engine into the ground, burn the cylinders out of oil/coolant and probably rebuild them on the older ones. God forbid your turbo shreds or your ECM glitches out nowdays.

It was mainly a "I refuse to buy new and need it cheap" option.

Volvo was sold out to the Chinese in 2010 (Geely). Expect parts discontinuations due to the push to electrify by the parent corp.

Lauren Bacall is like #2 perfect woman (1is garbo but she's nuts and a dyke)

Aside that.. I spent a TON to get my lift in... my fucking DAD modded his car more than any of mine or wifes .... Also barely related... dude its so cheap LED everything. One light people skip (they do head lights) do your reverse lights. Esp at night it's amazing. Pops WRX has a good setup but with new LEDS you basically have 20 feet of day light bright.

Even if you're not into mods etc that's safety. Momma basso barely can name her car's brand (it's a nice volvo) but I'll get some for her.. for 8 bucks.

Found a good turbo kit for our sexus. I just don't want to do install even with lift I'm a lazy fuck.. also in my line of work I'll be busy for a while. Damn if it doesn't suck having a 2 jay Z with no bewst.

How do people feel about the Hyundai Veloster? Three doors is a strange layout and the only ones I've seen in person have been driven by wiggers but they seem fun.

I've had no trouble getting OEM parts through my local dealership even for very weirdly specific stuff, but there are loads and loads of used parts online still available even then.

Wiggers? When I notice them (when they were new, and now when one is modified and usually obnoxious) they're almost always hispanics, especially of the "edgar" phenotype. Frequently with loud exhausts, ground effects, stickers, vortex generators. I think even the turbo Velosters are slow and nothing special in the hot hatch department. Veloster N may have had a lot of potential.

Dude why are you fucking around with teenager cars? You’re in America right? You want something accessible with easy to acquire parts. That means a used GM or Toyota, maybe a Honda if you’re feeling exotic. Look for a late 2000s or early 2010s car. You don’t want an older car for a daily driver unless you have experience with the particular car you’re getting. Yeah a 1999 GTI is fun until you need some bullshit German part for it and can’t find it anywhere except from some grifting asshole on EBay.

Just in case y'all wondered what a (likely) Trump voter looked like in the wikd, here you go.

Ironically, a Tesla Model 3 would be a much nicer deal if you treat it like how people at track day would. Get all of the aero pieces, proper tires and suspension needed for the best times and the police will not give any fucks about it on the public roads as long as it doesn't make any noise from a non-existent exhaust.

You would actually be saving time and money if you get a nice example with its battery still intact, especially considering that the anti-Elon protesting is at full swing right now. The amount of buyer's remorse from these embarrassed owners out there with their "bought the car before he went crazy" stickers is quite a sight to behold.

That really is more you can say than with any Filipino/Mexican tuned Honda or Hyundai.

He's right. Stick to what's commonly available for an easier time. Parts at autozone down the street vs a special order.
It comes from experience. I was into ‘imports’ when I was young (i.e. buying a Volkswagen and then acting like I had a Ferrari), but quickly learned there isn’t anything special about German engineering. You still have to do oil changes, tyre rotations, occasional repairs; your car will get the same dings and dents as any other. Rock chip? You still have to buff it out, but it will never look right unless you replace the whole panel, and that goes for every car no matter where it’s from or how expensive it is. At the end of the day a car is a car. Treat your daily driver as an appliance.

Mercedes-Benz sells economy shitboxes in Europe. Of course we don’t see that here in America because they don’t want to ‘tarnish’ the brand or whatever. German engineering is good but it isn’t magic. Toyota’s reliability is well-known. Many Honda models are comparable. A GM drive train will get you to 400k+ miles though everything else may be falling apart.

If you’re concerned about performance, the number one thing to look at is the tyres. Better tyres can improve grip, handling, and stopping power (the most important). A used car is likely going to need new tyres anyway. Of all things, don’t skimp on tyres.

Should have indicated that I've already purchased a second car and that we already have a reliable econocar that Mrs Minto is driving. My bad.

Biggest concern was a quiet cabin at highway speeds over performance. Good tires is a good tip though. Any recs on quietish snow tires?

I've been bit by parts breaking on 30-year-old Japanese cars and have no interest in doing so again. Its easy to dream about importing JDM cars now that I'm making good money but I know its never that easy. I appreciate you guys looking out for me though :)

Egg shaped piece of crap made by the worst manufacturer on the planet.
Good to know, makes sense that they've fallen out of production.

Tesla Model 3 would be a much nicer deal
Not a horrible idea. Quiet and unassuming but still more performant than I'd ever really need. I'm not interested in the telemetry so I'll wait until people are jailbreaking them.

Had one as a rental last year, it's awful to drive, handles like a busted shipping cart, loud interior, you'll feel cramped unless you're under 5'7" . Barely burns gas it felt like, though.

Quiet cabin means you want a Mercedes (some models are more money pits than others). They have the most quiet cabins from my experience. The bigger Lexuses and BMWs may also be quiet but I’m not sure. The smaller BMWs want you to be able to hear the engine. The lower end Lexuses are glorified Camrys.

Toyota Avalons are pretty quiet too I think but could be hard to find. Test drive on a highway before you buy anything.

EDIT: You also can do aftermarket stuff to make a cabin quiet, but keep in mind this will increase your car’s weight a bit.
