The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed".

Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

In their unexpected statement on Wednesday, also posted on their Instagram page, the couple said they made the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions".

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

They said they plan to balance their time between the UK and North America while "continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said discussions with the duke and duchess on their decision to step back were "at an early stage", adding: "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The couple's announcement on Wednesday comes two months after the Duke of York withdrew from public life after a BBC interview about his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in August.

Unrelated ramble - For some reason I am thinking of how in the 1987 movie Baby Boom the main character is a businesswoman who quits her job to live on a farm and starts selling the baby food applesauce she made for the kid she inherited.
Tedious movie. Should have been about half as long as it was
That movie made a huge impression on me as a kid because it gave me the idea that they’d just fob off an orphan on the first person around if the parents died.

If I ever own (enough) property, I would like to have an apiary. I like complicated-but-intermittent processes, and I find the cultivation of honey and bees fascinating. I particularly enjoy how distinctly each honey tastes depending on the plants pollinated.

For example, clover honey smells like flowers and tastes like springtime while a lot of winter honeys are too smoky or woodsy for me. (I also don’t like mesquite in anything in general.)

It’s too bad the Sussexes are so unlikeable and incompetent: this is yet another semi-serious topic that could’ve made a profitable TV show (similar to that guy from Top Gear). Maybe Catherine will do a bee documentary; I’d watch that.

I would watch this. There’s actually a lot of social history around beekeeping in the UK. We have a tradition of ‘telling the bees’ which is that you’re supposed to go and sit by the hive and tell them about family events. Anything like births marriages and deaths is non negotiable and will cause the hive to leave if not informed.
You could do a brilliant docco just on British beekeeping techniques and oddities.
There’s more than one stately home in the UK with a beehive built in to the structure - roslin chapel, whic h is a fun rabbit hole of it’s own, is supposed to have hives built Into the roofs as well.
Bees are fascinating. Beekeepers live longer, the frequency of beehive noise is supposed to be healing - there’s one of the countries like Slovakia or Slovenia that has bee therapy where you go safely sit surround by hives and the sound. Bee stings are also good for arthritis. In moderation ofc.
Bees are amazing. Honey is amazing.

The latest: She announced today that her new podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder, is coming out next month.

All I can associate with the term "Female Founder" is the race of shapeshifters who tried and failed to take over the Alpha Quadrant in the last few seasons of Deep Space Nine.

The very thought of shapeless Meghan with a face made of putty wearing an orangey colored floor length shapeless dress gives me gas.

When the Female Founder shtick inevitably fails, will she follow up with a Great Link podcast where she marches into a pond of shimmery goo? Will Harold go off to become one with the wormhole prophets? Will we get computers speaking in Majel Barrett's voice?

Will Harry be deported as an undesirable alien? 8)

EXCLUSIVE Prince Harry's visa file to be made public after bombshell ruling by judge amid claims he lied about drug use

Prince Harry’s visa files must be made public by Tuesday at the latest, a judge has ruled.

Judge Carl Nichols set the deadline to release the files which will give the clearest indication yet as to whether the Duke of Sussex lied on his immigration paperwork.

The judge, who sits in Washington, approved the redactions suggested by the Department of Homeland Security and said they were ‘appropriate’. ...

Is "female founded" even a big deal anymore? It's 2025. Women do stuff nowadays don't they?
Meghan still has the same mindset of 2015 feminists, so to her, it's still a big deal.
I'm curious how she is going to spin the "female founded" angle, considering all of her products have been flops.
