Late but was talking with a younger guy about this; when he was in elementary school he had something called "Accelerated Reading," and the points he got from their quizzes was tied to the "reading grade." I think the idea was that kids would read many books at their level, but the guy I talked to said he would just read like one or two "hard" books and not read any library books for the rest of the semester.
