Yep. I have binders of CDRs and DVD-Rs from my archiving beginning in the late 90s to today. Not a single one has failed yet. Bit rot fear is way overblown.

Ironically, from experience with my collection, it seems like later production year discs are possibly more prone; not less. I'm wondering if they started taking shortcuts and cost cutting measures with the industry standard for CD/CD-R. I'm someone who keeps their media stored responsibly and I'm still noticing disc rot in a lot of product from 2008 onwards. None of my mid-to-late 90s discs are experiencing degredation.


This is anecdotal, yes, but considering my sample size exceeds 450 items it's worth mentioning.

When it starts turning transparent or becoming miscolored, for one. But this had been discovered on the really cheap ones.

Yes if you use cheap Chinesium media you get what you pay for.

I made that mistake exactly once, buying a big 100 disc spindle of DVD-Rs at the Night Market for a laughably cheap price but the laugh was on me. Over half the first ones I tried were unreadable from the get go and so I didn't trust or use any of em. I donated them to my daughter's classroom to use in art projects.
