I mean, there is no lawyer in the world that could save Smally. Calling a lawyer (a public defender no less) bad based on the fact he couldn't come up with a successful defense to defend a drunk streamer that films his crimes AND his unrepentant attitude towards the court, Korean people and decency at large. That is calling someone weak because they did not survive a fall from the roof of a skyscraper. No one can pull that off.

I agree with this. It is very similar to the way Chris-chan's lawyer was criticized on KF, simply for representing his client. Everyone should be entitled to legal representation, especially those who are accused of very horrible crimes, or who are in a country where they don't speak the local language, or who are very stupid. That means someone has to fill that role, and Chris got lucky, aside from the 17 months of incarceration, because he got a highly experienced lawyer appointed for him. Johnny Somali's lawyer probably won't be able to do all that much for him, maybe request leniency because he has a mental disorder and request he be fined and deported to seek treatment in the US. He's going to end up in prison though. I'm sure the judge is already pissed off at him.

I hope he gets up to some more hijinks, like attempt to flee to North Korea or some stupid shit like that. Nothing that will hurt anyone other than himself though. Just rack up some more charges. Next court date is apparently April 9.

Pleading guilty might have been a calculated attempt to accelerate the trial and save him the death penalty. If he does that after every trial, he is cooked. Also, different judges will be on different districts so even if one is lenient on him, the other(s) might not. Anyone making the argument that the idiot will just get away is delusional. Yeah, he used the term gook when an additional charge was added on, and also expressed anger that Koreans are speaking and writing in Korean. Even when they are speaking English to him and providing him with a lawyer and a translator.

What tends to happen with foreigners, and this is also true for the US, is that it's common to allow a prisoner to serve their time in their home country.

There has to be an agreement between both countries. So typically when you hear talk about someone getting "released" from a foreign prison, that doesn't necessarily mean that they are going free.
