Generally speaking you're making more return on the dollar than if it sat in the bank. It's also usually super diversified so even if the economy is down it shouldn't absolutely destroy you. If all your eggs are spread across a thousand baskets the few baskets breaking doesn't fuck you, and considering how much the system(s) and people are tied to the line that must go up, growth be upon it; it's safer value wise.

They need to be able to keep up with cost of living increases, and pay for the administration of the funds themselves. If they just stuck the money in an account and then paid you that money later it wouldnt be much of a pension. Also if you worked for 20 years,, but live and stay retired on pension for 10, you likely didnt put in enough to cover your own share without there being growth through investment. Its not like social security where you just take the money from the working generation and pay it to the retired and those on gibs.

Though i wish social security would just put shit in a savings account for only me. Todays generation will pay more into the system then they ever receive.

I really want to know what shit investment company they have running their 401k, I logged into mine and year-to-date I am at -2% total value (so I'm down 2% since January 2025). My biggest individual loss is because one index is mostly tech stocks which have had some ups and downs - that particular index is -9% YTD. However, my 1-year rate of return is +15.36 so my 401k is not hurting as bad as some people claim theirs is.

Either people are panicking over year to date changes, or they really need to look at their investment choices and diversify. A 401k is supposed to be ignored so it can grow, but every tree can benefit from pruning. This is like panicking that a tree took longer to sprout blossoms, even though it eventually did sprout.

Checked my 401(k) again to compare to 8 days ago when doomers were shitting themselves over their 401(k) value dropping. 8 days ago I was -2% year to date, but today I am +0.09%. All value that was "lost" immediately came back, in just over a week.

People seem to forget that EVERYBODY expects the stock market to only go up, and their retirement and livelihoods are reliant on the stock market, so there is an incredible amount of incentive to keep things growing. It's why day traders go bust without luck, and people who just buy stocks and hold them nearly always end up ahead. Timing the market vs time in the market, and all that.

There was one interesting document where a high-profile intelligence officer blurted out that a small group within the CIA was responsible for killing JFK with mob contacts in Texas helping out. It supports the idea that rogue CIA agents (the anti-Castro Cubans) orchestrated JFK's assassination as revenge for the Bay of Pigs. Oswald took a shot but was the fall guy, and a random mob guy (Jack Ruby) shot him to prevent him from spilling the beans.

Fun fact: a lot of the anti-Castro Cuban assets were involved in setting up the Watergate scandal and bringing down Nixon. JFK and RFK are related to how the CIA brought Nixon down: Nixon figured out what the CIA did to the Kennedy boys and the CIA couldn't let Nixon take them down.

That's what the conspiracy theorist in my head is saying, anyway. Nothing is "confirmed" and the investigation at the time did not find anything conclusive besides X person saying Y over here, and A person saying B over there. When you look at how the intelligence agencies fucked over Trump, though, it makes you think about how sketchy and awful they really are.

Arson even without fatalities was a capital crime in English common law and even in the early US. It was also historically a capital crime in India and the far east, and technically is still a capital crime in Japan when the target is occupied or likely to be occupied by people, although it hasn't been enforced since the end of the war.
