They seem to have this idea in their heads that what they get to have is some Oliver Twist colorless gruel, when in reality with a few dollars on some simple greens and meats you can make damn near anything you please. I say this as somebody who's had to live on unemployment and make every cent count.

Walmart is the largest grocery store in the fucking world and it's not e'en close. They sell everything you could reasonably want, and have a shit-ton of discount, healthy, even organic shit. If you can't eat well and cheaply from Walmart, you're not fucking trying.

What bureaucracy? EBT is a gift card that only works on certain items and is automatically applied by the register. All it takes to restrict a new item is a new entry in a database.

What's funny is we already have WIC which is usually administered separately from EBT, and is very VERY anal about what you can buy, at least in most states. Like "this month you can get 3 gallons of whole milk and 10 gallons of skim milk" anal.

There were many attempts over the years to "destigmatize EBT" which included things like letting some treats like soda be bought by it.

But I think we need to go back to multiple tiers of EBT, the "this is to help you working poors" EBT which is restricted/limited (but perhaps not as much as WIC, and a wider "you're so fucked up EBT is all you get" which allows a bit more niceties.

But making it so EBT couldn't buy products with HFCS in it would solve America's obesity epidemic almost overnight.

Oh, and the X% of employees are on SNAP? That shit is basically just "these employees have kids" - you can qualify for SNAP for some DAMN HIGH income levels if you have enough crotchfruit.

I would nominally agree to that if most “hot foods” wouldn’t be used to buy fast food, also it’s literally 20 minutes to cook a simple fucking meal just get a rice cooker some broccoli and chicken. Cooking isn’t hard.

its an open secret that the government paying for EBT basically subsidizes the existence of frito lay and coca cola as a projection of american soft power globally. the problem is that the system has existed for long enough for those companies to get complacent and forget about their end of the bargain, and the government in usual fashion stopped tightening the reigns because it makes corruption easier. at this point they aren't even projecting american culture anymore and the entire system can probably be gutted without any real consequence to american hegemony. it might force poor people to pay $8 for a 12 pack of soda in this economy themselves instead of us giving it to them for free though, and that's also the democrats core voter base

It's kinda funny that their argument is about whether the government can decide what you can and cannot eat or drink when the actual situation is that the government is deciding what you can spend your free government handout money on. Government assuming that you can't be trusted to make good decisions with the money you get from them is a pretty good assumption to make, IMO. It's not as if SNAP is their only money. It's meant to be for essentials. They can spend whatever they have made in addition to SNAP on their sodas if they really want them so bad. I live in an area with a lot of low income people, and I constantly see the same people using SNAP using it on gas station hot food like 711 pizza, then paying cash for lotto tickets, alcohol, and cigs. If you have money to play the lotto, maybe you don't need tax money to buy food. Not saying it's everybody on SNAP, but I see it so often that I know the program is fucked somehow. And guess what, the bad actors are taking benefits from people who probably actually need them.

I think I just find it ridiculous that people get so up at arms about shit like this. Am I crazy in thinking that when you are poor or broke, your options are indeed limited? And that sucks ass and it's the impetus for changing things in your life? I really don't even think this needs to be a political issue tbh. I don't know why either side would argue that shit like soda needs to be an essential food eligible for SNAP. It's just so retarded at it's core that it doesn't even bear examining.

I go to my 'local' (regional) grocers just as much, but yeah wallyworld unironically has everything you could need. Bags of rice at 70 cents, tinned fish at a couple bucks a can, veggies for a dollar (though I often struggle to get the freshest stuff). Relatively cheap meats. I could go on. Just stick to store brands, learn some basic recipes, and you might surprise yourself with how little you need to spend to actually keep yourself fed above this imaginary 'subsistence level' dining people in this thread like to imagine.

Look at the expiration dates on shit. Everything in America is designed to be able to sit, shelf-stable, for fucking months for God knows what reason. And what the fuck is GUAR GUM and why the fuck is it in my cottage cheese?

Do I need pasta that will be good until 2035? Apparently fucking so.

(And the shit, if it's not like literal fruit and veg, lasts way fucking longer than the "sell by date" which is what they call expiration dates now. I've had five year old pasta, it's fine.)

I just was reading a study from some food scientists who measured nutrients in produce. Turns out frozen veggies are the most nutritious.

But if you eat fresh veg, you want the stuff that was picked the most recently, and they found (unexpectedly) that because Walmart has so much turnover, their produce has the most nutrients.

This is of course “trust me bro” because I just spent ten minutes looking and I can’t find it. Either google or myself is going senile, I think.
