Tails becoming a complete coward
This is wholly in-character for him, it's just like Unleashed where he does nothing to defend himself and Sonic has to come in and save him.

Shame the "create your own OC!" idea was shelved and forgotten about.
It's somewhat returning in the Sonic Fall Guys ripoff and the Sonic website has a feature that lets you create your own 'fan card' with an avatar.

Ok but that neglects the fact you see him get sucked via vwoop warp beam back to eggman's base in the background.
I don't have an explanation for that one. When I first played the game I saw that and assumed they were saving Infinite for the final boss battle. You wouldn't believe my disappointment when the white Nega Wisp Armor burst out of the Death Egg Robot instead of Infinite.

Eggman works with robots most of the time, and Sonic even mentions a mecha, so I thought Infie was a robot. Back then I didn't even think these linse were in reference to Infie being an artificial being but rather mistranslation or a scrapped plot that went nowhere. I mean, everyone broke character here and the writing was a mess, with Knucks being the commander of the resistance despite having 0% skill at leading anything, Amy being around doing little, Tails becoming a complete coward, Eggman torturing Sonic for months instead of finishing him off immediately...

Infinite being created by Eggman was a scrapped plot that went nowhere, just one they forgot to completely scrub lmao.
The OC creator was a good idea on paper but it was heavily lobotomized to avoid creating characters that were "cooler than Sonic".

It's true that Tails has been a non-entity since Unleashed, but to be fair he fought a more powerful version of Chaos before so it doesn't make sense for him to cower at Chaos 0.

I still find him being relegated to tech support and having 1337 h4x0r skillz to be more obnoxious than just being wimpy, personally.

Not really, his personality was downgraded ever since Sonic 06. Frontiers tries to fix that, but we won't know if it sticks until the next main game.

Didn't play that one as it's multiplayer stuff with little relevance. Not sure if that counts.

Cooler in personality or design? Around Forces, all Sonic characters' bodies were standarized barring the few "big guy" exceptions, which sucks.

He also fought back an invasion of his home by himself, before meeting Sonic, and forced Eggman to retreat after the latter seemingly killed Sonic in Adventure 2.

I still find him being relegated to tech support and having 1337 h4x0r skillz to be more obnoxious than just being wimpy, personally.
That unfortunately has been an issue since Adventure era. Amusing how Sonic Boom fixed that to some degree by making his inventions faulty at times, so he's not an one-note tech guy.

It was at its most agitating in Lost World, where he's relegated entirely to just acting as Sonic's Siri replacement/IT guy while talking about offscreen hacker stuff he did with his magic tablet.
The literal sniper wolf could have worked
Tangle and Whisper are unironically really good character concepts, I'd almost say they're the best IDW OCs in terms of story potential, but all the writers seem to really wanna do with them is chain them together and have them occasionally try to kill Mimic in a comic where the sniper definitely can't snipe people.

Design, which is why all avatars are the same minus the ears and some oddly placed bumps or spikes on their heads. I remember reading it in an interview but I can't find it now.

Sonic adventure literally opens with tails' chaos emerald powered plane malfunctioning and the tech guy stuff isn't really a factor in the plot otherwise save for the SA2 thing where he makes a fake emerald.
EDIT: and backtracing the IP to the ARK for eggman's webcam.
Fully agree about the body type homogenization being awful. Similar vibes to nintendo's weird obsession with phasing out unique characters for recolored toads.

My favorite depiction of Tails in the whole franchise is in Mania, as in they portray it as just Sonic's little brother who tags along, hell they even make him a bit smart by just having him use his tails as a fan when Chemical Plant starts or a bit of a scaredy cat when lighting appears before the final stage, or how they portray that he is still a little kid having fun by having him spin in the Mirage Saloon stools.

If there is something that I've learned by playing these games is how good simplicity is and how much you can fuck up everyone by letting them speak when you can't write dialog for shit.

The lightning thing is also referenced in stuff where the characters do speak.
Found out while trying to find the scene again that this scene got referenced in the boom tv show, complete with tails jumping onto sonic in a scooby doo-esque fashion.
I've always been completely fine with the games not having voice acting, but I also don't like the characters being locked to mute, especially the shit from recent years where they've gone back and done shit like remove the voice lines said by sonic in CD because "classic sonic is mute!" branding BS.

Edited my post because I forgot for a bit the lightning thing came from this.

In the bio it's a dislike rather than a fear, though.

Yeah, it's why I admire simplicity and why there is something to be said about restricting oneself in certain ways. I'm not saying characters shouldn't talk but the contrast between the examples you provided and the old games is astronomical. In both how much you can communicate without ever saying a word and how little they say when you let them open their mouths.

Also, I can't believe the writers of Sonic Boom got paid for that.

Autistic post, but I think Mario has better world building than recent Sonic games. In mario there's some semblance that there is a civilization where people live. We don't really see it in a lot of games but in the rpgs we can see that toads live in towns. They have some sort of government led by peach, which facilitates commence and recreation. There's also a rival civilization, Bowser's, which is much more militaristic. There are other civilizations as well, in addition to unsettled and wild areas. Civilizations are generally homogeneous. Toads live with toads, and yoshis with yoshis. Bowser's minions are more diverse, but this is not out of the ordinary for an empire builder like Bowser.

Is there civilization in recent sonic? There are towns, there is commerence and there are manufactured goods. But who is facilitating all this? Who is gaurding the roads? Who is giving out orders? Who is making Sonic's chili dogs? Who is standing in opposition to Eggman? In IDW, there is a corporation independent of eggman, but there is no government in sight. Even after he commits 9/11 him and his company are allowed to run free even after he is cornered by Sonic and co. The restoration appears to have some authority, but they are explicitly not a government. Is Sonic the government? Does he collect taxes, or is he a firm believer in anarchism or libertarianism? The locations of the world all blend together as well, their inhabitants a mish mash of randomly assorted furries. The diversity of form made meaningless by the uniformity of their behavior. And what of Dr. Eggman? He has no civilization. He is a lonely mad surrounded by machines of his design. His only interactions with another living being are when he arbitrily decides to harass sonic and/or make a play for world domination. How big is the world anyway? Does Eggman really have enough troops to garrison the entire world, or does he intend to decimate what he cannot control? At least Bowser has a realistic goal of kidnapping and marriage. And where does he reside mainly? Where does Sonic for that matter? Mario lives with his brother near Princess Peach's castle. But Sonic? Is he homeless? And if so, is it by choice or by necessity? How does he afford Chili Dogs? Do the people donate them to Sonic instead of paying taxes? Are chili dogs the primary mode of exchange in Sonic's world?

Dr. Eggman is completely unique compared to the rest of the world's inhabitants. Was he born like everyone else or did he simply come into existance? Was the tile of Doctor given to him or did he give it to himself? Where did he come from anyway? From somewhere on the world, from a different planet, or from a higher plane of existance? Is Dr. Eggman a god in disguise?

Who is making Sonic's chili dogs?
Dr. Robotnik... at least according to AoSTH lore.

In fact he does it so often, Sonic can literally recognize his distinct cooking style and ingredients just by the smell alone. It's like watching the worst police force try to arrest a drug addict because the druggie keeps getting away even after they plant the evidence on him.

Tails pisses me off so much in Forces. Leaves sonic to get tortured for months while cowering in fear of Chaos 0 - but then later becomes incredibly smug and just walks up to eggman to ‘Um Ackshully’ him. It’s a nasty combo of being totally useless in the plot (seriously, he literally doesn’t do anything but make obvious observations), yet acts and talks like he’s tough shit. His ‘True Dat’ line at the end sucks too

Right, I forgot that part. The point is that in Sonic Boom sometimes his invention fail because he made a mistake, not because of emerald fuckery. In Sonic Unleashed and forward all he does is technobabble spewing.
Hell, Sonic Boom even made fun of his fixation of putting his logo everywhere!

Did they? There are some unique Toads like the girly one, or Captain Toad IIRC.
On the plus side, Mushroom Kingdom has at least 3 different races: Humans, Toads, and Boos, so they're not starving for variety.

Now why hasn't Evan made the 300iq move of referencing Tails' fear of lightning every time Surge shows up on-page?
Because she's lightning more than thunder?
And she seems to focus on Sonic, not Tails.

Yeah, Mario world has actual world-building, and even economy, as basic as it can get. Now, for these stupid mandates Sonic IDW can't even talk about money for... Some reason.
Funny how previous games like Sonic 06 made Sonic pay with rings.

But Sonic? Is he homeless?
According to these Tails videos, he is, and he crashes at Tails' home. Boom predicted that one and also made Sonic a terrible guest to boot, which I bet it's canon.

It wasn't emerald fuckery, the engine just shits itself.
You see it happen firsthand in his version of the opening cutscene after you unlock him as a playable character.
It's a setup for the later reveal of the plane he was working on... which he then realizes last second that he forgot to fucking add landing gear.

Can't find the cutscenes by themselves anymore on youtube outside of long ass "all cutscenes" compilation vids for some reason so these playthrough vids with timestamps are my best way of showing well known shit from an over 20 year old game.

See this would be a funny theory if it was like way back in sonic 1's release time but like since then we've seen a shitload of humans in the games and he's got a grandpa that looks like an older him that the feds ganked to cover up their own project they deemed too potentially dangerous.
There was also this animated short that predated the 3d games where there's loadsa people.
It's kinda interesting how hall of the mountain king used to kinda be associated with sonic despite never showing up in the games. Shit's in the DiC sonic cartoons and this non-DiC game look accurate one included as a bonus in a port compilation. Pretty neat how sonic's shaded like he is in the promo/cover art for the classic games here in some shots.
MARYO EDIT:

There used to be a lot more unique toads, and toads weren't treated as separate from humans but just like an ethnicity of people. Mario sunshine started the trend of toads just being different color toads but in that it made sense because they were background guys and colored to be distinct from toad, the guy that's mario's friend. That continued into galaxy but they only had captain toad as the one named guy who games after implied kind of that he's THE toad but he's got the red generic toad outfit instead of the red hat/blue vest combo.

For some reason after nintendo started leaning less into "toad is bald under his hat" and more into the social media theory "the hat is maybe his head" shit that started popping up around a decade back you see a shift in design post sticker star where every toad is colored the same and looks the same to the point the last named one, toadsworth, randomly vanished a few mario games back and we haven't seen him since.
They used to wear DIFFERENT FUCKING HATS too!

The "no money" mandate shit is retarded because in the games rings are always used as currency. Like as far back as sonic 2 with the casino stage.

Thanks for the trivia, it seems I have to play more Mario RPGs, I only played the Mario and Luigi saga (except for the Brotherhood one, which looks weak).

As for Toadsworth, I believe he simply died of old age offscreen.

Whether or not the Toads are a different species or races, they are close enough to human. Some of them are actually brave, like the ones from the soccer games, who willingly put themselves into a charging Bowser's way.
