My grandfather was one. It seems like just a social club for old men that occasionally did some charity work and when one is in a position of authority, they give special favors to each other. He used to bring a lot of drugs from Canada into the US (nothing like cocaine or heroin, more like stuff that is/was prescription only in the US but over the counter in Canada) and would go on days when the a Freemason border guard was on duty so he was sure to avoid inspection.
