It has been nearly a year since
my review of Super Mario Wonder, which I kept mercifully short due to my disinterest in the game. You might be thinking I abandoned writing those, perhaps given the general disinterest this thread has shown in reading them. Fear not though, friends, for the truth is even worse. In the past 9 months I have played only one game on my Switch, the subject of today's review, Balatro. Being a worldwide phenomenon, TGA GotY nominee, indie darling and many other such things, I don't think the game needs an introduction but, as is tradition, will be giving it one anyway. A deck building rogue-lite that is styled after, but does not play like, poker, the game tasks you with building poker hands that multiply off of rules-changing "jokers" to beat an ever increasing minimum score. Battling through round after round you strive to make number go up, unlocking funny cards along the way.
My experience with the game was similar to that of most people's, hearing of it soon after release and eventually paying the small fee required to play. I found the mechanics to be fun and enjoyed the playing card ascetic. It was fun to try to "collect" all of the cards and see the funny jokers. That said, I did not get sucked into the game like some people have and only put 35 hours into the game, finishing with it in two to three weeks. Although I did "beat" certain decks, an easy feat, I never got a true win, getting all the way to the end and beating all of the boss blinds.
To sum up the game, its okay. Not great, but by no means bad and easily worth its money, Balatro is a game that I could recommend as a time killer to practically anyone. While the game itself could earn a 2 out of 2, I can only give it a
1 out of 2 on the Switch, which with its bulky form and inability to fit in a pocket is a much less suitable platform for the game than mobile, which would emphasize its best quality of being a pick up and play time-killer with simple controls.
Don't expect too many more of these reviews, by the way. I'll keep writing them for Switch games but not for Switch 2 so there might be, like, five left in total...
