There was a lot of gaslighting about Bioshock Infinite, but I would argue the first GG-like situation in the industry that had an almost identical rollout was the Mass Effect 3 controversy. Every single person who wasn't a Bioware developer or game journalist agreed the ending was 24-karat shit, nothing about it was justifiable, and the DLCs, if anything, made it worse. Every single week we saw new articles fellating the game harder and decrying the playerbase as entitled, if not outright evil, for taking issue with the ending being so bad as to undermine the entire series up to that point.
I also recall there was some game website's infobabe in the actual game itself, and this was never really disclosed or talked about how having someone who's meant to be covering and reviewing your content in a non-biased manner is now part of the product.

Horrfying.

And now we have a similar problem with that youtubers showing up in everything now. I'm tired of seeing that one tranny in everything, the one who used to do tranny porn.

but I would argue the first GG-like situation in the industry that had an almost identical rollout was the Mass Effect 3 controversy.

I agree, it was the first instance of what we know as backlash from gamers against the industry. There were some similar things before, but ME3 ending was the first time when the Media was really putting a real divide up and siding exclusively with the industry over the players.

Before that there was the Driver 3 controversy, but in that case the media people actually did some mea culpa and admitted that they lied explaining to people they took a deal and were told the game would be fixed by launch.

Florida real estate market crashing with no survivors.
Biden paying defaulted mortgages.
Cheap housing is on it's way bros.

All bubbles eventually pop.

So much of how things happened during that era were essentially a dry run for what would happen during GG, and I feel like it's a big reason so many people refused to be gaslit when GG happened.
A large part of why people refused to get gaslit was also because for at least the 5 years prior to GG you had journalists shitting on gamers and calling them every -ism and-phobia in the book and crying about how there wasn't enough hecking minorities in games or conventions because they were all Huffington Post/Vice/whatever other SJW blog rejects. You also had controversies with the integrity of journalism beforehand, from Driv3rGate where journalists were praising that game despite it being a turd, The whole Gamespot/Kane & Lynch scandal, and then all of the journalists bitching about Resident Evil 5 being set in Africa because you had to kill black zombies despite the fact that it wouldn't make sense for there to be large numbers of white zombies and if there were in that game they would bitch about that too and in that case rightfully so.

mass effect had a massive, sweeping marketing campaign that talked about it like it was a game on the same level of depth and interactivity as skyrim but with a guy on a spaceship that could travel between different maps. i was so hype to play it in 2007 i directly rented it from blockbuster for a week instead of using the game pass and i legitimately beat the entire game in like 4 days. it's kind of a cool space game but its half baked and doesnt know if it wants to be a captain kirk type of or a space jesus firefly type of story. then for the sequels it just abandons the star trek and goes full firefly. game is mid at best.

what was astounding was everybody you would talk to irl would be incredulous you would criticize such an awesome franchise but like 15 years after the fact and the game has literally no legacy. they couldn't even squeeze a worthwhile cash grab sequel out of it

sci fi in general is dead. Star Trek worked in the late 80s early 90s because Americans had hope for the future. Star Wars is dead because Lucas films is ran by a moron. The only sci fi with any cultural relevance is 40k. I heard the expanse is good, but it isn't main stream. Maybe they should make a movie or game?

Why can't a normal raid or zfs array be used? When one drive has a problem, just change it for another drive.
because that would require attention and continued spending, not just dumping paper in an old mine.
look at this way, you can bet there was someone in the 80's going "why not put it all on tape?"

the initial transfer from analog to digital would make the contents easier to handle overall, but at the same time handling the medium itself would become more complicated, especially when it's about long-term preservation.

Mass Effect 3 was 99% a great game
if you ignore the austin powers fuckbot, the whole MUH EARTH wank for PR, the deus ex machina, reapers "beyond comprehension" letting said deus ex machina dock with the fucking citadel right in the middle of a space battle, especially when they already know everything from assimilating illusive man, fucking cereal killer kai leng... but sure, 99%.

because mass effect was shepard's story, and that story ended in 2012, not necessarily in a good way.
the whole industry running head first into a wall repeatedly since then doesn't help either.

They absolutely could crack down on spam, it’s just that they don’t give a damn.
Every fake account increases their number of “users.” Their stock price moves based on their number of users. Tbey give a damn in that they actively want the scammers making a million new accounts a day. Every social media company is a massive financial fraud.

As mentioned the game was Shepard's story, and the people at Bioware failed to grasp the cool sci-fi universe they built and make use of it.

Andromeda showed they had no idea what to actually do with what they had, and the failure of ME3's ending makes it so that expanding on the universe is absurdly difficult without a very competent writer who is willing to settle for a smaller scope of story. Which make it impossible to progress because even if you could find such good writer to deal with the material the nature of the first Trilogy means that the owners of the IP would never settle for making the smaller scope game where you play as, say, a Blackwatch Turian officer going after pirates and traitors or a N7 helping stop piracy and protect colonies. It HAS to be just as epic as the originals, with just a big a story. Which means new Reapers. Which fucks the universe over.

fair point.

I don't remember the austin power's fuckbot. Muh earth was retarded. The deus ex machina and the citadel docking was the ending that was bad. Kai leng was also retarded. Ok so like 75% of the game is good. I liked how the Krogans and the space gypsies were handled.

Bioware should've spent time making a new IP while they were working on dragon age Inquisition. Something not high fantasy or high sci fi. Mass Effect Andromeda killed whatever good will was left in the brand. Dragon Age Vailguard killed whatever good will that was left with Bioware.
32 percent of game developers are women or non-binary.

To be fair that is because Bioware is no longer Bioware.

We are dealing with a Ship of Theseus situation here, except instead of wook and sail rigging it is human capital. How many people from 2024 Bioware were around in 2008 Bioware? Very few. Same with say Bethesda: How many people working on Starslop had worked on Skyrim? Or even Morrowind? Almost no one.

These studios are shadows of their former selves. All they have is the name, all the talent is long gone.

You also had the whole shitshow with Brad Wardell, where they breathlessly covered every single second of that controversy, declared Wardell guilty in everything but name (we had one particularly noisome journalist imply that because he chose to fight it in court he was super guilty, in what I can only describe as the kafkatrap to end all kafkatraps) , only for Wardell to win the trial and have his accuser's charges thrown out with prejudice, so she can never again attempt that shit - whereupon much of the journosphere pretended nothing ever happened.

They did shit like that over the Wardell case, which even at the time was tacitly known to be horseshit, but when faced with overwhelming evidence during the initial Eron Gjoni and Five Guys accusations - something with actual fucking evidence from the outset - the same fuckers circled the wagons, basically guaranteeing they'd be called out for not doing their usual vulturing because it was very clear they had something to hide.

You can't do that shit without people noticing.

Fun note: That shit is the real reason GG happened. They had been setting up to get a footprint in the industry from the nanosecond the industry outperformed hollywood, only to arrive too late.

It HAS to be just as epic as the originals, with just a big a story. Which means new Reapers. Which fucks the universe over.

Which is incredibly frustrating because you don't need the Reapers at all (or anything like that) to have equivalent stakes. You just need good writing and writers who understand what they can do with the universe they've been given. A team of Autists from this very fucking subforum could and have written amazing stories based on any of a dozen sci-fi properties, big and small, and through nothing more than a good understanding of the universe they're writing for, came away with gold. Modern game dev doesn't hire good writers, it hires whatever scrag will push agenda and not threaten the worldview of the landed gentry, consequences be damned.

I do not joke when I make the assertion that many high-level writing staffers could be outperformed by randos on Fanfiction.net.

Why can't a normal raid or zfs array be used? When one drive has a problem, just change it for another drive.
Raid is backup for your hardware, not your files. If you accidentally delete a file, or it gets corrupted, raid does nothing to help you fix that. For backup you need redundant copies, ideally in multiple locations

Also, one of the issues with raid is that when an hdd dies the other drives in your array are also likely at the end of their lifespan because they're from the same lot# and restoring a lost disk is extremely stressful on the remaining drives to the point that it's not uncommon to kill more drives while attempting to get the array back up and running. It's better than nothing and at least gives you a chance to restore the latest version of a file that you were actively working on but if it's your only copy you're eventually going to lose everything

LTT tried pretty much what you're suggesting and there's been multiple occasions where they almost lost everything because of single pieces of hardware dying, and it hasn't even always been hard drives that caused the issues

In the end, for Hollywood/Game Industry writers, ideological purity and adherence trumps skill and good ideas.

Executive meddling is also a fucking plague. Writers are constantly being made into secondary sources for their own writings, having to instead follow story beats given to them by marketing and directing. It's why Hollywood slop like Fast and Furious or Marvel will have a dozen writers, they aren't looking for a story they are looking for a script which also fits what the studio wants.

But yes many writers are beyond incompetent and have a job only because of nepotism and ideological adherence. Emil Pagliarulo for example is a complete hack seems to openly hate videogames, constantly huffing his own farts about how his writing is good by gamers are too shit to get it and instead would rather rip pages off his wonderful book to make paper airplanes out of them (paraphrased from actual quote of his). Naughty Dog infamously kicked out the writer of the original The Last of Us and Uncharted to put Druckmann who didn't know shit.

The Dark Brotherhood quest line in Oblivion was pretty good. He wrote that. However, he wrote Fallout 3 and 4's awful mainquests. In my opinion, if you're going to write for video game RPGs then you need to be DMing a tabletop RPG at least 1 group if not multiple. Good for team building and writing.

Update on that broad from the Subway who fell flat on her face trying to take a MAGA hat off a zoomer. NY Post unmasked her! NY Post article | Megalodon | Archive.Today

She’s going to need a re-brand!

The woman who received “instant karma” after berating a President Trump supporter on the subway — and then face-planting on the platform after trying to grab his “Make America Great Again” hat — is an increasingly “agitated” creative director for several luxury brands, The Post has learned.

Alberta Testanero, a 55-year-old dual Italian-American citizen, went viral for the caught-on-video incident on the 6 train in Midtown last week after branding the MAGA fan “uneducated” and a “racist.”

Testanero has gone off the deep end when it comes to politics, a former colleague claimed.

“She and I stopped being friends a while ago, as she became extremely liberal and very agitated,” the one-time coworker told The Post.

“I see nothing has changed, but now she’s gotten into the extreme, doing things like this,” the coworker said of the subway incident, adding that Testanero was known to argue with Republicans and frequently call out people she deemed “racist.”

A freelance creative director and branding specialist who has worked with posh outfits like Tiffany & Co., Coach, Bergdorf Goodman and Kate Spade, Testanero prides herself on “maintaining the highest standards,” according to her online profiles.

“An experienced team leader, I have a keen understanding of the relationship between corporate strategy and creative vision,” the Murray Hill resident and Fashion Institute of Technology alum boasts on her LinkedIn. “No matter how large or small, I approach every project with enthusiasm always furthering brand vision and maintaining the highest standards.”

On a Facebook account apparently belonging to Testanero, she shared a family photo of the Obamas and a bizarre image of “Joe” and “Barack” friendship bracelets.

The lefty art designer publicly called out the MAGA fan, wagging her finger in his face while aboard a northbound train around 11:30 p.m., according to a video that has since racked up more than 5 million views.

“If you f–king voted for Trump, you’re a racist!” Testanero yelled at the man during the March 19 incident.

The young man laughed, asking how he could be racist and arguing he is indeed “highly educated.”

“Oh, are you?” Testanero responded. “Then why are you wearing that hat? Only uneducated people wear that hat.”

Some bystanders urged Testanero to leave the guy alone. “That’s why he won, because of people like you,” a rider chimed in.

Testanero’s face plant on the subway platform after trying to snatch the MAGA cap was called “instant karma” by one observer.

When the man got off the subway at the 28th Street station, Testanero lunged at and chased him, trying to grab the hat before she fell face-first onto the filthy floor.

Social media users slammed Testanero as the “perfect definition of the left.”

“This is a great example of brainwashing,” one Instagram user said. “A hat should not elicit a deeply emotional response. Step out of your echo chamber once in a while.”

Testanero did not respond to inquiries and refused comment when The Post showed up at her Madison Avenue apartment building Friday morning, telling the doorman to turn the journalists away.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!

I did a Brave search on this woman because I wanted to see if any lefty news outlets covered the story. I got much more than that: The AI-generated response basically soft-doxed her!

Link 1 (ilanrubin.com) - Nothing of interest

Link 2 (thesasamanifoundation.com) - She's apparently on the board of fucking directors for a charity that does gender equity stuff in East Africa.

Link 4 (cityrealty.com) - She apparently sold some sweatbox (725 square foot) on Madison Avenue for $591,000 back in February.

Link 6 (propertyrecordcards.com) - She apparently once owned a house around 2003 in an affluent North Shore neighbourhood in Long Island called Woodbury. I think she's probably kicking herself for selling the house in 2003 for 150 grand because Woodbury NY 11797 is one of those annoying neighbourhoods where the residents are so rich they don't want street lights on any of the main roads, and you have to drive past deliberately wooded areas to pull into a driveway where the house is like 1000 feet into the property. Property values there nowadays hover around the 750 grand mark at least nowadays.

I must emphasise all this was given to me when I did ONE search on Brave for this broad. Anyone else who wants to dig deeper can feel free to do so.
