Bad webcomics

You just can't be edgy when the characters are actually adorable. See also: Shadow the Hedgehog
Are you sure about that?

Man.

What happened to the coffee shop owner, her black-haired employee, the blonde autist girl, and MC's buddy/bro? I dropped off when they were the cast at least.
- Owner
Ended up dating Handstab's self insert for a while, they broke up (I forget why), ended up in Lesbians with Handstab's quirky stoner boss. Recently got lesbian married.

- Other employee
I don't remember. Nothing of note before Handstab fucked the tranny except they confirmed she wasn't the coffee shop owner in disguise.

- Blonde Quirky Chungus
Nothing major I know of. She was still just being coom bait for autist g/f fantasies. She was being set up to date a male AI but that went no where because Straight relationships are heckin' oppressive chud.

-MC's Buddy
Who? Like Handstab, his self insert doesn't have any friends.
The perverted robot trooned out.

Ooooh boy. Well, thank you tons for updating me... most of that seems in line with what I'm learning about what happened to this comic now. Basically I had heard here and there over the years Handstab got weird and full lefty prog retard, that it reflected in his comic, but I never knew it got...well.... that bad. Especially since the comic in the years I read it was IMO explicitly slice-of-life, if with the requisite Weird Webcomic Character (the pervy robot), and truly looked to remain that way at heart even with the gradual zanier stuff thrown in, and-

If you mean this guy, he looks like this now.

I just went to look some of these characters up as their names come back to me and it's just.

https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=5531 This is the latest Marten strip? He talks about sticking his dick into a jar of peanut butter alongside the talk on him dating a troon, WHAT THE HELL. And I guess the.... blob....jello.... thing girl is talking about.... vore?

......

Guys, I think I just felt a bit of my soul die learning about what happened to a moderately amusing webcomic I read way back for fun as part of a bunch I checked out daily back in the aughts. Just... man.

So given how he's trooned his author avatar, how long do you reckon it is until Dan announces he's on HRT and wants to be called "Dani"?
Dana. He calls himself Dana Shive on X and Pedosky. He claims to be "gender shrug," and even had some cringe as fuck EGS-NP comic about his author avatar giving a lecture about the whole thing (while the avatar was dolled out in the most stereotypical bimboish look he could draw). Total AGP shit. His latest (before this latest hiatus) was him pretending to be a v-tuber setting up a new avatar for his author avatar which was, well, your bog standard AGP creating an OC, but usually they don't do it in public.

I think he's of the literal autistic variety and is terrified of sexuality despite writing what's literally a fetish comic for his entire adult life. He walks a very thin tightrope between random transformation / anime fetish shit and actual comic. I think he mostly gets away with it without getting canceled over it from the troon death squads because there are a SHITLOAD of troons that can cite webcomics like his as being when they discovered "gender euphoria."

Comic's been going 23 years, assume he was 16-18 when it started, that puts him into his 40s now. He couldn't survive without that Patreon income, so it's all about keeping his supporters around with just enough fanservice to keep them on the hook but not enough to break that invisible line.

He's basically what you'd get if Tom Preston had an almost comical amount of humility and, while you can tell he (and his audience) are getting off on some of it, it's most of a secondary thing to actually trying to tell a story.

I remember this comic from like, 22 years ago. Yes shut up I'm old. Why the fuck is it still going? Did the dude and his chubby roommate finally get together as part of the premise from what I remember?
Hahaha, no. His friends on X / Pedosky that drove him to cutting his drawing hand up a few years ago for the unforgivable sin of drawing one of his female characters in a bikini would NEVER allow him to have a heterosexual couple in his comic.

That drama (also known as "the plot") dragged on for about 10, 15 years then Marten ended up fucking THE CLAIRE, the most insufferable character in the comic -- which is saying something -- a random girlboss tranny who is supposed to be a librarian (for comically clueless definitions of "librarian") he added just to get rid of the "problem" of Marten, who he has started writing out of the comic by sending him to wacky robot science lab in Canada. Hence the slimegirl. (Also not mentioned, the shortstack loli goblin he ended up adopting there.)

Meanwhile the chubby roommate magically discovered she was "bi" (read: lesbian, because like all "bi" women once they're paired with another woman they're never seen even entertaining the thought of an icky male relationship ever) when she started working for an underground robot fight club as a mechanic and met the bouncer there, a giant female AI that just happens to be one of the ones that's all curvy and human like (under the bolted on armor) and not like, most of them pre-year 17 of the comic. Her name is Bubbles, and when she still had characterization she was a stoic straight man to everyone else's zaniness.

I'm not even mentioning the random robot cop turned social worker and her vampire-like godlike AI friend and the zany cast of characters at the robot rights advocacy company.

This has basically been the story of the comic for the past 10 years or so. He keeps adding new random characters that catch his eye, obsessing about them for a few weeks worth of strips, then dropping them, some literally vanish forever. Some of them are added just so he can get social credit with his "friends" on X-now-Pedosky. Like the nerdy personal assistant girl who suddenly was nonbinary a few days later once his friends started screaming about it and he caved. Or "Emmett" the obviously female high schooler with a crush on another high schooler who everyone in the comic magically knows to call "they/them." Or the tranny's brother who discovered he was "bi" and then never even looked at a woman again. Or the random autistic brown girl who should be in a home cause she literally can't function.

What happened to the coffee shop owner, her black-haired employee, the blonde autist girl, and MC's buddy/bro? I dropped off when they were the cast at least.
  • Coffee Shop owner was another female character (read: all of them) who randomly turned "Bi" and was paired off with another woman (Seriously I don't think there's a single straight woman in the comic now, and almost all the characters other than Marten and Pintsize (who is now bi) are girls.)
  • Black-Haired Employee literally vanished after doing "science things" IIRC, her possibly coming up (and the fact that Jeph completely forgot about her) is a running gag now that the main male MC is at a wacky mad science lab in Canada.
  • Blonde Autistic Girl got a personal assistant against her will, told off and disowned her absurdly wealthy mother over it, got her pet AI a twink body, gave her "nonbinary" personal assistant to her mad scientist father (she's now dating the station's AI), then went on wacky adventures throughout Europe and came back tanned and slightly less autistic after raising Llamas or something at a monastery.
  • MC's buddy/bro showed up every 3-7 years for a strip then vanishes again, but this is less likely to happen now that the MC is in Canada.

Guys, prepare for a huge textwall and I'm sorry for it. It's just.... just... my jaw has dropped.

So like.... let me say this all over again. Those couple decades ago, I was just a teen and it was really cool being online back then. You've all heard this about the old-school internet, I know you have, because the golden age of webcomics I'm sure this thread discusses was back then. It was really, genuinely fun finding new webcomics - people giving them a go and seeing the really motivated ones begin to put more work into their ideas, or the more organized ones begin crafting stories, or just having a lot of really funny shit to laugh at. And because it's old-school internet when everything was pre-bot and a lot smaller overall, it somehow felt personal in the good way? Like I probably could've e-mailed some of these comic creators and get responses back. It was great! You could tell these guys were having fun and it showed through, you know?

So like putting QC into that context, as a guy living in the boonies, it was, IDK. Cool? To find a webcomic on indie and hipster shit, living the freewheeling life with good bros and cute girls in a then-cool area to me (Boston always seemed fascinating both for history and modern culture), eh? The kind of life I'd like when college would come for me.

So reading up on what QC became over the decades is just... oddly depressing. Just that this comic became a zombie when it should have ended a long time ago, and then it and Handstab becoming fully engrossed in the horrible culture war crap in the worst way and it showing in the comic. And then fully giving in, apparently, into his shifting tastes and fetishes for fantasy women he slaps into the comic than focusing on the cast he originally came up with. Oh, and of course, everyone has to be le heckin' trans and proud and gay and what-the-fuck-ever. And yes, it's aggravating to see considering he had IMO a really nice setting and slice-of-life balance with the requisite Webcomic Zaniness (Perv Bot, weird names like the coffee shop being "Coffee of Doom") and an obvious eventual end to the story (Marten and Faye getting together, since I do think he originally intended them to find the other is who they needed as balance).

And Handstab is like approaching 50 and he's still writing these college-age people, right? That's what strikes at me just as much as the comic's bullshit itself. I'd call myself a guy who loves past aesthetics and nostalgia, but... this guy's ACTUALLY stuck there instead of moving on with his life, and it's a subtly terrifying thing to see. Stuck forever to something you made as a young dude when the world simply moves on further and further away from the youth you chained yourself to.

Man....

Handstab troonout arc when?

So like.... let me say this all over again.
Also just so you know we call him Hand Stab because his lefty "friends" turned on him for the crime of having a character who was "thicc" who didn't look completely dumpy in a bikini. In respondse he stabbed himself in his drawing hand and had to take a few weeks off. No lessons were learned other than "simp to woke politics harder"

Never meet your heros or dig up their KF thread.

I'll give him some credit.
I don't. This guy basically makes pedobait characters then acts performatively shocked when pedos show up and bait to them. This isn't some innocent character where rule 34 from degens shows up, this guy makes fetish comics and big shock, people are publiclly gooning to a character in them.

This is like tossing raw steak into the ocean and then posting about how its awful the sharks are showing up to eat them while counting the throwing 20s the sharks toss in the back of your boat.

It was also how Megatokyo got and stayed so big for so long, despite Fred constantly missing deadlines and focusing more on melodrama than the fun, goofy shit that got people into the comic. No one was really doing manga inspired comics, they were mostly inspired and trying to imitate western newspaper comic strips.

Apparently a lot of the bands Jeph references are pretty normie for most indie people and they think of QC as more of a poser comic. Possibly why he stopped talking about music in the comic.

Indie music fags call literally everyone who listens to a band that pulls more than five people at a dive bar "posers" just like punkfags do, that's nothing exceptional. QC's a faggot comic, but this in particular just a consequence of "alt music" kikes being the peak of crabs in a bucket.

While you aren't wrong, I had a roommate I could get to completely drop a band by listening to one of their songs where he could hear/see, I don't think Jeph liked any of the bands he name-dropped in the early run (I mean do any indie 'fans' like the obscure bands they fluff?); He just name dropped them to seem cool.
And I guess the fact he stopped tells me he was just doing it try to seem cool and/or relevant.

If it makes you feel better, Meredith Gran got wifed up and pregnant a while back, which ended Octopus Pie but saved her from the progressive disease that so many (nearly all, tbh) succumbed to. I still haven't played her vidya game but it looks good from the stills.

Does anyone remember, or at least have heard of The Pigeon Gazette by Jane Zei? It was another quirky, relatable comic where she used her socially awkward self insert. At least it had a dynamic art style and some mildly funny jokes (unlike certain pizza pastry...). She seem to have disappeared from the internet with this being her last comic.

Maybe she had a real heart attack, a homeless guy stabbed her outside her parent's house (she was from California) or she finally decided to start a family. Who knows.

Her Patreon is still active but hasn't been updated since April 2022. She also worked on another webcomic called Genji Cat that featured a character from Overwatch as a cat. The last update was in June 2020.

I've always wondered why these "wholesome big chungus nerdy adulting is hard I don't wanna work" comics always try to appeal to cat owners.

ETA: Improved opening paragraph and minor text adjustments.
