When you're in something competitive like high score records, the playing field has to be level and fair. Emulators have features that regular arcade machines don't have including bindable controls (on an emulator you can use a keyboard to play, while on the original hardware you have to use joysticks and buttons), save states (giving the ability to stop playing at any point in time and continue exactly where you left off), and the considerable convenience of being able to do play wherever the hell you want since the emulator will run on pretty much any computer.

You're overestimating how much people care about a guy cheating at Donkey Kong and filing frivolous lawsuits. His reputation isn't good, but there's a lot of ways that it could be worse and being blamed for a suicide is one of them.

The reason the judgement here is unreasonable is because Billy didn't actually show the defamation caused him harm in the form of lost financial opportunities....he didn't even make a good case that it caused him great emotional distress nor did he even prove he was ostracized socially.

He didn't show significant "real" damage the defamation caused him, which is why although Karl was certainly in the wrong here the actual judgement is kangaroo court tier.

The judge very clearly disliked Karl personally for his brazen attitude so hit him with the worst judgement his Australian nonsense allowed, presumably because he thinks Karl is a bad person, unrepentant and likely to continue defaming Billy and others in the future unless he's taught a lesson, more than he thinks the defamation warranted such extreme restitution.

I would say Karl has a good chance at reducing his costs in appeal, but Australia probably is just that stupid. Karl was clearly in the wrong here, it was indeed defamation, but it was also largely inconsequential to Billy, which is why an internet fued like this should result in a sensible judgment of little more than a formal apology and deleting the video.

Yeah I totally get and somewhat like people going full blown autism with their arguments and having them turn into 20 page long forum threads filled with autistic slapfights. But if you're going to go the legal route then you should sure as shit know where you stand and have some concept of US and Australian legal systems before risking this much for something as fucking dumb as this shit.
