Based upon the judge's wording, it sounds like Australia's defamation laws are the same as the U.S. defamation laws. The plaintiff has to pass extreme burden of proof hurtles:

It is way harder to prove defamation in the US, especially if you are a public figure. Karl fucked up not only by having the case hosted in Australia, but he refused to issue a public retraction about his false claim and instead doubled down by talking about Billy over and over again.

Karl lied about the lawsuit being a cheating thing. It was actually about the accusation that Billy caused a suicide, which has no evidence and actually is full blown slander. Apparently Jobst lied several times to fan the flames, too.
