Honestly, the ICE agents fucked up here by nabbing the alien in the middle of the trial. The judge is right to be mad about it. Agents clearly knew where the guy was going to be. They could have waited until the trial had concluded before taking the guy. They would have had an even stronger case to remove him had they done so.

"ICE, why are you being so evil and taking that poor immigrant?"
"Well in addition to <list of federal crimes> he was also just convicted of <more state crimes>. Our job is to remove criminal aliens from the country, which this one clearly is."

I think the state charges are part of the problem. If it's in a liberal shithole they will intend to hold custody of them over the state charges and deny deportation. They can keep them in the state and then later release them and go "well he served his time" protecting them from deportation. Our prison's are funded by our taxes and much nicer than foreign ones. Now he's out of the country, not on our dime, and in a shittier situation.
