It already has. His expose videos about video game collecting/grading fraud a few years ago triggered a huge lawsuit between people involved with WATA and Heritage Auctions that's still dragging through court today. This judgement could throw a wrench into that whole thing.

I don't think a court will accept that as an argument in an unrelated case, because the topic for the defamation had nothing to do with the core matter.
Just like Karl arguing "but Billy cheated at Donkey Kong!" did not help him in his case, mentioning Karl defamed Billy with the Apollo Legend claims does not impact the grading fraud case.

"But the guy who made a video about this was fucked by Billy Mitchell for defamation in an unrelated case!" is not something I see helping either side.

There was talk about using Karl as an expert witness by one of the sides in the case(s). I don't know all the details but surely that's no longer an option now.

GetTheGregGames, a Youtuber/collector who streams video game auctions, talked about the case extensively for his entire Heritage Auction stream last night. He went back and forth with Karl a lot during Karl's WATA saga and became friends with him. Karl even frequently joined the chat (Greg streams these auctions every week and is generally a good Canuck). Greg mentioned that Karl quit his discord yesterday because of the heat he was getting. Greg the Happy Canadian pulls no punches and basically buries Karl.

For those not watching. The whole case is based on Jobst stating Apollo Legend paid Mitchell a "large sum of money" which caused him to kill himself.

This was untrue, and the fact Jobst kept saying it, even after being told he was wrong, and Apollo Legend did not in fact pay Mitchell any money.

The judge especially points out that he is not judging whether or not Mitchell cheated at donkey Kong. The defamation is solely down to Jobst claiming someone killed themselves because of a payment of money, and kept saying this (i.e. left his video up) even when told he was wrong.

edit: judgement: 350K AUD plus interest 39K, plus Mitchells legal fees.

well there's the secondary problem where primitive atari-era arcade games are basically just extreme reaction time and endurance tests and in the late 80's and 90's video games started to become a lot more strategic and require more complex inputs. pretty much anybody under the age of 50 who didn't grow up with them thinks of early 80's arcade games as an anachronistic curiosity because they aren't very engaging and they don't have much spectacle or difficulty to them beyond a brutal skill check.

the best 1942 player in the world could probably play a tohou bullet hell shooter made 40 years after 1942 (the game idiot) and would be insanely good at it. i seriously doubt billy mitchell's skill at donkey kong is transferable to anything more modern than donkey kong, i doubt he would be able to hold his own in slightly older arcade games

He definitely cheated and has been dead to rights on that for years. The issue is that Billy actually is good at Donkey Kong. He just uses MAME and fake arcade cabinets when he sets these records and then lies about it. He'll even lie about using original hardware while being shown evidence of himself, in fact, not using original hardware.

If this was only about cheating then Karl would have had a glorious victory and it would have finally shut down Billy's grift. Well, to a small extent since Billy is that big of a liar that he'd just spin the story and still be invited to talk at tons of retro games events.

IIRC Billy had mathematically impossible scores like Todd Rodgers that were certified by Twin Galaxies. There's no footage of the majority of his records, and despite claiming to have gotten all his scores live and on real hardware, the only donkey Kong game play footage we have from him was proven to be played on MAME. But again, people weren't really upset about Billy cheating. They were upset that he was suing people for calling him out, which is why Karl is such a piece of shit for stringing his viewers along on a fake crusade after Billy dropped that part of the lawsuit.
