It was horrible, I was a teen during the Obama years and we legitimately struggled. Gas was almost 5 bucks a gallon at one point and I remember 5 dollar loaves of bread. And that was plain ass regular white bread.

Gas got down to $1.78 which is almost as low as I’ve ever seen it (gas station diagonally across from my childhood home was $1.58 in the twilight of Bush’s second term) and groceries were affordable. I remember being able to get the 32 Oz Gatorades which they don’t sell anymore, they’re 28 ounces now, for a buck and Powerades for 88 cents at the Dollar General down the street from me.
The Maruchan “Yakisoba” microwave noodle things were .79 cents. They’re almost $1.50 now.

In a more serious post, a couple bad years for the stock market are worth it to gain real value back into our domestic gdp. The death of the manufacturing sector in our country was designed to turn us into a consumer class which while good for the people who control how pricy the things you buy are, it is not good for the average American. Your retirement will mean nothing because it will not keep up with inflation and the greed of multinational corporations. Who know you are fucked and cannot do anything to fix it because they own the boats that keep your lifesaving medicine coming in. Let alone the fact your kids will have no jobs because they are not necessary anymore because the automation of the service industry reduces the amount of workers needed to serve to population. Not including the skill bloat needed to secure a job when you now need to speak every third worlders goofy language to have a job because they have been imported to lower laybor costs below rock bottom. America needs more real jobs that produce tangible goods because an economy can’t be exclusively filled with services and government jobs.
Addendum: also it’s far better for a country to own its supply lines so it cannot be big dogged by the people who control the essentials that are needed to ensure your states power and security work when you need them.
