A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Hotels housing migrants are threatening to kick to them out after failing to receive payment.

Hotels across London are threatening to evict hundreds of migrants after failing to receive contracted payments from an accommodation firm dumped by the Home Office.
Stay Belvedere Hotels (SBHL) was stripped of its Home Office contract over alleged "poor performance" just days ago - and now, hotel owners claim they cannot pay their insurance premiums due to the missing payments, leaving them in breach of their contracts.

"We are saying that if there is no payment, there is no option. We will have to evict the asylum seekers," one hotel owner told The Telegraph, speaking anonymously.

SBHL was reportedly operating more than 50 migrant hotels before losing its contract with the Home Office in late March.

Reform have secured a second seat on St Helens Council after winning the Sutton South East Ward by-election.

The election was held after the seat was left vacant following the death of Liberal Democrat Brian Spencer.

Voters went to the polls on Thursday and John Pinnington won the seat for Reform, with 447 votes.

David Smith, of the Liberal Democrats, recorded 147 votes; Matt Butterworth of Labour, 364; and Melanie Lee, of the Conservatives, 46.

Turnout was 17.76 per cent.

Update on the Huddersfield murder from the BBC: Man charged with murder after boy, 16, stabbed

A man has been charged with murder after a 16-year-old boy was stabbed to death in Huddersfield.
Police were called to Ramsden Street in the town centre on Thursday and the boy was taken to hospital where he later died from a single stab wound to his neck.
Alfie Franco, 20 from Kirkburton, in West Yorkshire, is due to appear at Leeds Magistrates' Court later charged with murder and possessing a knife in a public place.
A man and a woman who were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender have been released on police bail, West Yorkshire Police said.
The force said the incident was "not gang related" and has warned the public to be wary of false information.
"We are aware of misinformation circulating on social media, specifically X, regarding the circumstances of the incident and the ethnicities of those involved," a spokesperson said.
"We are limited in what we can say legally, but what we can advise is the incident is not gang-related or linked to any wider dispute between groups."
On Friday a crime scene remained in place around New Street and Ramsden Street as officers investigated.
The scene stretched from the borough's town hall up to the road's junction with New Street.
West Yorkshire Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime Alison Lowe called the teenager's death "an absolute tragedy" and urged people not to worry.
"Even though we've had several young people die across West Yorkshire by knife crime over the last five years, it is still a very rare event," she said.
Kirklees Council leader Carole Pattison said she was "deeply shocked" by the incident.
She said: "My thoughts are with the family of the victim and everyone who has been affected."

I think people (not just the government) want to shy away from the idea that there's some element to murderers and psychos they can't predict outside of actual insanity, and even then that's palatable since insanity is an obvious cause.
