I'm an admitted Nintendo fan, but even I can't defend that price hike. Looks like I'll be sticking with the Switch 1 for a while until this shit hits the bargain bin.

Nintendo fan here, too. The price hike is a pretty tough pill to swallow, though. I'm okay with the console's price, but the games are pretty steep. I'll be consulting third party options to get the games cheaper, as I did with Tears of the Kingdom ($60, got delivered day one by the way).

I tried doing that with this thread and we've seen how well that worked out. If we moved all the politsperging to the other thread, this thread would only be at 200 pages.

In fact, this thread is a perfect example of the audience Danny has cultivated. We have the politispergs shitting everything up, people who like his Metal Mythos, the people who like his comic reviews, people who only liked his movie reviews, and the people who liked his piss poor game reviews. From what I've seen, Danny's political takes aren't accurate enough for him to be a full-time political commentator (Russia has nothing to gain from invading Ukraine) and will claim he foretold certain things without citing where or when he did it. The few times I've seen him try to, end up as Terran editing in some side-line insult at some politician he doesn't like.

It was a meme on this thread at one point how long he takes to make his Metal Mythos videos. He mentioned numerous times on stream that he was "interviewing" people close to Alice for his Alice Cooper Mythos. In the end, it gave the same information one could glean from an episode of Behind the Music. There are other channels that now do what he did but better. He doesn't play most of the games he reviews and tends to turn into DSP on stream. He doesn't make enough comic or movie reviews for those fans to really stick around.

It's good for us that he keeps all his shit in one channel, but we're his detractors. Him putting both gaming and politics takes in one channel just makes it easier for us to mine for lolcow content.

My point is that Danny has managed to captivate this little pocket of people who want to hear about the nerdy shit they love but also want to have enough political discourse in their diet that they can sit at the grown-up table for the holidays. One must admire the balancing act he performs to keep both sides satiated. He's a jack-of-all-trades but master of none. He can talk a little about all of these things but if he ever tried to fully dedicate himself to one, he would crumble.

Most of them get burned out one way or another. If they don't get burned out by his bad gaming takes, his dipshit takes on religion and politics do the job. Shit, most of us here were once his fans.

I hate the adjusted for inflation nonsense people try to use. Depending on your age, you didn't have bills to pay, and groceries, gas, and the cost of living were much more affordable. If you had a part-time job, then you had disposable income, and there were places like FuncoLand or Babbage's where you could buy used copies of games or trade in for the latest console game that was complete, on cart, and didn't need additional patches or DLC.

It also depends on the time period, and the 90s were a great time to be American. People had a lot of expendable cash, jobs were aplenty, the economy was great, so paying $80 for a 16-bit cartridge wasn't that daunting a task when there's money to spare.

AAA companies could argue that the cost of development has gone up, but they literally control that (nothing is stopping them from just spending less time detailing every fuckin tree branch) and still make record profits year over year lol.

Hell, remasters of older games, or games made with older graphics, are doing just fine. Go look at Boltgun and the Dark Forces remaster for the proof. They're both made with the 90s sprite-graphic shooters in mind, and they're doing just fine.

Shit, the Switch is the most profitable console of the 9th generation, and it's way behind the Xbox Series X/S and the PS5 in terms of graphics and engine power. But the games are fun, so we stick with it.

It's not about the money; it's what you do with it that counts.

I miss the old days when most games shipped completed in a copy that you can buy at a store, lend to a friend, and then get back. Yet that practice of downloading a game, let alone parceling it out piece by piece for DLC, was another fruit of what Razor called the "westernization" of gaming. He whined and bitched at the Japanese game devs who were traditional and did things by the book, but back in those days, they shipped their games complete and on the disk/cartridge. Now that's slowly getting replaced with the western practice of game devs who can and will sell it online only and parcel out a game piece by piece for DLC content. The Japs didn't start doing it until they saw the West do it. Prior to that, they shipped their games finished, on time, on a physical copy, no questions asked.

Look, I love my Xbox 360, I really do. And I love many games that I've bought online, and games that had DLC on them. I couldn't have played Symphony of the Night or Dark Forces if I didn't purchase them online, and the Jetstream Sam DLC of Metal Gear Rising, as well as Mass Effect 2's Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC, were some of my most memorable gaming experiences. But I'd be an idiot if I didn't bring attention to the fact that such practices denigrated the games industry as a whole.

It also incentivizes people to quit. I know one guy (who I do not like) who teaches BJJ. He brags about this being his business model. He'll sign someone up for 6-12 months and stretch the shit out of them, until they do not want to come back. Run them ragged, stretch them, but don't actually teach them anything. 9/10 people quit and he gets to collect a number of months tuition for free. I suspect the same principle applies to a lot of businesses that sign people up for extended periods of time.

Maybe because Sony's hardware is stronger? Maybe Danny-boy needs to consider that? The PS5 is the second-strongest console spec-wise in the market right now, only surpassed by the Xbox Series X. That, and it had more games to play.

I'm surprised that Razorfist forgot how we also raked Sony through the coals during the days of the PS3, when that console released at an enormous price ($600) when compared to its competitors, but it didn't have as many exclusives and at most just had the best tech specs and a Blu-Ray player, whereas the Wii and the 360 beat it in the exclusives game. People laughed at it for being an overpriced brick with little to offer.
