Been lurking this thread for a while, but I finally snapped after seeing Reddit’s absolute meltdown over Wayne Gretzky congratulating Ovechkin for tying his goal record. That’s what did it for me. I needed to dump somewhere sane.
Ovechkin ties Gretzky’s record, and Gretzky, being the actual GOAT and not a salty relic, publicly congratulates him. Says his Russian grandfather would’ve been proud. Total class act, just like he’s always been. But Reddit?
They start calling him a drunk, a traitor, a Putin and Trump bootlicker, a disgrace to Canada, blah blah blah.
What they really hate is that Gretzky didn’t pass their stupid Reddit loyalty test.

He’s not anti-Russia enough.
He’s not anti-Ovechkin enough.

And worst of all he’s not anti-Trump.


He supposedly said a couple neutral to nice things about Trump over the years, and that’s basically a capital offense on Reddit. Doesn’t matter what you’ve done, what kind of person you are, or how much you’ve contributed to the sport. If you’re not screaming “Orange Man Bad” every 10 minutes and denouncing everyone who’s ever looked at Putin sideways, they treat you like you’re radioactive.
Reddit has fully become an ideological purity cult disguised as a forum. Sportsmanship, history, context none of it matters anymore. Ovechkin could personally donate 50 million to Ukrainian refugees and they’d still shriek that he’s a fascist. Gretzky could’ve stayed silent or bitter, but instead he chose to be gracious, and that triggered the soy mob into full-on frothing rage.
Anyway, that was my final straw. Felt like I was going insane reading that thread. Happy to be dumping this here instead of over there with the moralizing hockey-analytics redditlibs.
