Hololive has a branch of vtubers called Holostars. The male vtubers have a significantly smaller audience and generally are geared towards attracting fujo chicks who are into gay shipping and stuff. The male vtubers in hololive very rarely collab with the female talents.

AFAIK Merryweather is very popular with weaboos and he had done work with other more-popular VTubers beforehand. This shit is too gay, even for an anime avatar like me though.

I remember seeing people talk about this in Twitter. It was mainly people calling Merryweather spineless to for caving to Twitter pressure about the model, especially because the girl behind the model didn’t have a problem with it and really liked the design.

He’s also had some typical pre-Elon Twitter behavior despite drawing a bunch of comics that lean heavily into those “problematic” anime tropes like fanservice and so on. Even made a comic about how he was quitting Twitter for Bluesky only to come back like a month later.

Niji is mixed and Hololive has male exclusive branches but they have far fewer of those. The most successful of them tend to do BFE focused content, apparently there's a large lucrative market of lonely women as well.

Seeing all the controversy on Twitter about the new character, it made it look like Merryweather was just not going to release it. But seeing the statement, it's just a ban on NSFW content of the new character?
I guess I see how preventing NSFW content of a character could hinder its marketability, but it's just on Merryweather's server. He's not going to have the balls copyright strike everyone who posts it on Twitter or any of the various other porn-sharing sites, mainly because such an action would decimate all his brands. This controversy seems like a bunch of nothing overall.
