MARATHON Trilogy - Official Trilogy, Forge & Anvil, and Scenarios

Necroing this old thread to point out that the entire Marathon trilogy is now available on Steam, so it's easier than ever to wile away the hours killing Pfhor and murdering every BoB in your way.

Classic Marathon
Classic Marathon 2 (the XBLA graphics are also available for download)
Classic Marathon Infinity (you can also grab Double Aught's Coriolis Loop netmap pack)

It comes alongside updates to Aleph One that add achievements to the trilogy, as well as enabling Workshop support to make it easier to snag mods or total conversions. Some of the big ones like Rubicon and Apotheosis are on the workshop (and YUGE of course), and I'm guessing others will make their way there over time. You can even snag the Pathways into Darkness remake if you want to go interrogate some dead Nazis. Currently playing through 2 with a soundtrack mod and it's really enhanced the game; don't worry, I already did a full run without any music for the purist experience.

On one hand, I want to give Marathon chance given it'll be the only "dedicated" Triple A competitor to Tarkov - and if it does well, it'll keep floating Destiny for at least this year and next year. Being competition to Tarkov might actually make BSG pull their heads out of their asses and put the vodka bottles down and actually work on the game instead of broken patches every three months and a wipe every 7.
Unfortunately, Marathon clearly lost the plot in terms of aesthetics in favour for this psuedo-cyberpunk tranny slop that infested Destiny 2 since 2020's "Beyond Light" expansion.
The aesthetic could work if it wasn't so fucking "look trannies made this!" and it was just gritty and visually identifiable as Marathon and not a cyberpunk shit pile.

The people that were on the team that made marathon are long gone. Bungie is a shell filled with trannies that will make garbage that wears the skin of your favorite games. This has happened to many developers and will continue.

It's sad that nobody except for Jason Jones is still there and he gets paid to do fuck all as far as I'm aware. This is the series that put Bungie on the map and lead them to make series such as Halo and Destiny and become AAA-tier to begin with.

You can tell by the "please be good please be good" comments on the video that most people are not feeling as hyped as they say they are. I've also seen people compare this game to Destiny and how happy they are about it being more of the same shit, which disgusts me that Bungie can get away with calling it "m a r a t h o n" while it has almost nothing in common with the classic series and Destiny faggots will defend them because "um, it's the same universe and all that, except it's a different take on the series because it's a reboot of the franchise and you can't expect it to be the same as the old games, also LOOK HOW COOL THIS ART IS GUIZE!!!" I hope their headquarters suffer a catastrophic power failure while upgrading the firmware on their servers.

The game's artstyle is certainly unique, there's aspects of it I'm not entirely against, it's mostly the character design that irks me. It's just "we made our trannies design these!". Latex robot cat is mostly what tells me that trannies shat on what potential anything Joseph Cross didn't handle 100% by himself had.

Despite my disdain of Bungie and their weird tranny developers, I genuinely want Marathon to blow my socks off, I want this game to be good, but I've unfortunately played enough Destiny to know better, and even being so deep into the sunk-cost fallacy I have with the franchise.
Maybe my opinion on the style will change when there's more of it to see, and if there's forms of character customization, but considering it seems to be one of those hero/operator based shooters (a-la current day COD or Overwatch.) my hopes for that are also pretty low unfortunately.
I genuinely, really, want to be wrong on all of this.
 
Only thing I want is for someone to make a mod with the original plot and terminals, but with less dogshit map designs.

When the earlier Marathon's came to steam last year I was on it like a fly on shit. I put more hours into those games when I was young than I care to admit. It was great to take that walk down memory lane, but on some of the maps, mostly a fair few M1 levels, I was thinking deep in the back of my mind: "how on earth did I ever put up with this shit?!!" Even reasoning why - being young and having all the time in the world, and no steam and no steam library to distract and fall back to, and the fact that it was new and exciting - I still gotta wonder.

Regarding new Marathon, I have no idea what any of that shit is supposed to be but it's not Marathon. Appears to be among the most cynical "look in our IP chest for something, anything we can dig out and sell" corporate actions I've ever seen.

Yeah. One thing id did well with Doom 1 and 2 was the map design. I'm not going to argue all maps were stellar or had good flow, since a lot of the later Doom 2 maps were very gimmicky, but there was almost nothing like the illogical mazes of Marathon.

I don't really blame Bungie since both they and id were basically charting unknown waters, neither had any idea what would and what wouldn't work, id just lucked out and had better map designers, while Bungie had some stellar writers.

The community did this itself. The canyoupetthedog twitter account went from a novelty account to an engagement bait. "add a petable cat and you will get free retweets to thousands of people"
 
Art style seems interesting, but it sure as hell doesn't fit Marathon.

I don't really know how to properly describe the old art style, but it seemed to be an interesting blend of kinda cartoonish aesthetics with (mostly) realistic hard sci-fi technology. Only game I can think of with a similar look is the original Half-Life.
