I assume it's a purely economic/bureocratic decision. If you're not married and don't have the same last name as your kid it just makes life harder, people will assume you're not the parent etc. Also probably tax reasons, now he has two dependants. He's also getting up there in age and if something happens to him Marie cannot make any medical care choices for him if she's not his wife.
