The simple truth is both are big economic blocks that need to trade. By making trade difficult with the US they're going to go to the other markets (i.e. each other) in order to start bringing in revenue. The short term loss of the American consumer market will force this change. Whether people like it or not, the world moves on, it doesn't matter if you're the US, China or Mozambique, if you're no longer profitable or viable to work with people will go elsewhere.

Robotics arent nearly as advanced/adavcing as fast as people think. If this is true then where the fuck are those AI Robot dogs I was promised a decade ago by Boston Dynamics? Have you ever seen one of those things in real life? I havent.

In all seriousness do we even have any manufacturing left to protect? Beyond specific industries America doesn't make consumer goods anymore. If tarrifs are designed to protect American industry, then what consumer industry is there even left to protect? Think about it, for example how many sneaker companies still have their factories in the usa? I can think of one and it's new balance. To make the materials requires tooling and machinery which doesn't exist. If Trump really wanted to bring back American manufacturing he would use the Sherman anti-trust act (to get the Justice department) to start breaking up monopolies. Then maybe we can talk about tarrifs.

Until Trump touches those mega-corps nothing truly will change. That is what the difference really was. Back in the day we had domestic competition, now all competitive products are made from 3 major companies who have an unofficial cartel made up so they don't really interfere with each other. Foreign brands are acting as that competition.

You're right there isn't much left to protect, but one of the reasons we lack a lot of domestic production is BECAUSE the megacorps can outsource labor and materials globally, to the lowest bidder, while up-and-coming competitors cannot. Competitors die in the cradle, or get bought out, and that's if anyone bothers to try. I don't view this so much as protecting existing domestic, as incentivizing that exact competition you think we need (and I'm inclined to agree we need it). This does attack the megacorps in a roundabout way, which is why the market started shitting itself. Wiping out a few trillion in "value" in a few days is no small feat
