I would imagine you would only get a boilerplate "We don't comment on ongoing investigations" response. Which I suppose would at least affirm that he is on some sort of watchlist as a suspect.

There's also the added confusion that "the RCMP" can refer to both the federal, FBI-equivalent national police force or the podunk, local sheriff-equivalent police force subcontracted out to provinces and municipalities that don't provide their own (which is likely the case for any jurisdiction involving Prince Edward Island/PEI where she disappeared, but not the province of Quebec - who have their own provincial police force - the Surete du Quebec. Quebec is reflexively opposed to anything federal and always maximizes state/provincial rights, so would push hard to keep the RCMP out).

I'm not sure if New Brunswick uses the RCMP as well for local cops, but wouldn't be surprised.

Then there’s the fact that JFG has spread the jurisdiction of this case across 4 provinces - PEI, New Brunswick, Quebec and now Alberta.

I'm not sure how much of a role the federal RCMP plays in coordinating domestic criminal cases across provincial boundaries. Their resources and reach are very minimal compared to an outfit like the FBI who are known to swoop in and make a case "federal".

The national level RCMP AFAIK plays more of a role in dealing with national security stuff and crime crossing international boundaries than they are with taking over high-profile domestic criminal cases.
