Anyone who seriously thinks a 104% tariff on China is gonna “revive the economy” is fucking retarded. Full helmet, licking windows on the short bus tier retarded. All it does is nuke imports, jack up prices, and piss off the Chinese enough to retaliate harder. Manufacturing’s not coming back, costs go up, markets crash, and the average American gets bent over a Made-in-USA barrel with a smile. This isn’t strategy, it’s economic self-harm disguised as patriotism. Inflation’s gonna rawdog the middle class while boomers cheer like it’s Reagan’s second coming. It’s not a trade war, it’s a fiscal gun to the dick. Absolute fucking clown show.
Yeah I agree. I am not educated on this at all, so if I'm off someone correct me, but I just don't think Trumps vision makes sense in our modern world.
Ok so Chinese imports get more expensive. He thinks this makes people buy local US made goods, but the problem there is many goods don't have a US analog, or its just not as good. From what I can see, many US companies still raise prices along with the tariffed imported goods to make more money, essentially having the US consumer pay that tariff (could be wrong?).
The other problem here is that he's doing all this to encourage more companies to build factories in the USA, creating jobs and cheaper locally made goods, but I don't think that happens either. That turnaround can be years off to get the permits, construction, hiring, training, way past his term, so we don't see any benefit potentially for a decade at least.
Along with that is the silent reason why all this overseas production happens - The slave labor and child labor. China and India for example do this, adults barley make $10 a month sometimes, children are used. Even if all the above happens, even with tariffs, its still exponentially cheaper to produce over there vs locally here with the USA's minimum wage, employee health insurance, etc. None of that exists overseas. You can't get around that.
I'm not very informed on this, just thinking through it critically with limited info so maybe I'm wrong. On paper it doesn't seem fair that other countries tariff our imports and we don't, but there is probably more to that I'm missing.
Ultimately I just hate both sides. I know its easy to say that and be a fence sitter, but I really hate how both parties go about things. Our priorities in the USA should be lowering real estate prices so citizens can buy affordable homes, stop corporations from buying real estate homes, reduce property taxes, stop tying healthcare to employment, encourage people to get into jobs the country NEEDS like more medical professions, reduce education costs significantly and fast track people into these needed roles, Try to provide free housing to people at every level, even if its small, if its enclosed and safe that would go a long way for our huge homeless problem. These are the real problems we should be talking about, focused internally. Pull back from funding Israel and all these foreign wars...
