I've been hearing people compare HRT in the 2010s speedrunning community to the crack epidemic in 1980s black neighbourhoods.

At first I thought that was crazy, but the more I think about it, the more sense the metaphor makes.

What do you think? Was trannydom (and I guess by extension the other stuff coming along with it, like porn addiction, feminist politics, and LGBTQPed in general) the downfall of the speedrunning nerds you knew, or was it something else?

There was just a lack of action on the Turbografx as far as speedrunning goes. It's an overlooked console at any rate, so you can imagine how small the runner-base was for it. I was shocked to find that my main game, World Court Tennis, hadn't been run until I started it in 2019. If it were a Nintendo game, I guarantee it would have had a leaderboard of at least five people ten or more years before then.

There's a number of consoles out there (even Nintendo ones such as Virtual Boy) that don't have significant optimization or even any runs on many of their games, I don't understand why runners stick to fruitlessly grinding away attempts on games with only a few remaining frames to save. Personally I had more fun exploring untapped canvases.

The fact that people were being banned for disagreeing with moderators while easily provable cheaters got to stay on for years just for being friends with said moderators is what clearly communicated that it was not worth the effort, especially as bannable offenses were getting met with stricter punishments. This cliquish nepotism isn't exclusive to Arcade Donkey Kong.
