This is a pretty common punishment in the cartels called La Tabla. Often for lookouts who fall asleep or street vendors/taxi drivers who aren't paying up.

There are of course some which are incredibly brutal. Like they will lay the guy (Or girl) naked on the floor and start smashing them all over the body with 2x4's or something until their entire body is bruised up. Often they'll make them walk naked through the streets covered in horrendous bruises as a warning to all the locals

That's adrenaline for you. I've read many accounts of how hard it's sometimes to kill a person in melee. One br*tish soldier from wwI mentioned how a german stormtrooper continued to fight for some minutes with a big knife sticking from his chest, almost down to hilt and blood gashing everywhere. Sword/rapier duels were often extremely bloody back in the day, going on and on and on, some claim that was one of the reasons duels moved to pistols- it's much cleaner and quicker.

You really want to obliterate the brain stem, since that part is mostly responsible for basic living functions. You can survive (depending on what you call survival) a huge amount of brain damage. The brain stem is where it ends tho.

Suicide is a supremely selfish act. Sure, occasionally someone with a terminal disease diagnosis might want to skip the horrible pain coming their way and go out on their own terms. I don't blame them. If I were in such a no-win situation, I'd consider it, myself. Most other suicides deserve contempt. This is objectively the most creative I have ever seen the cartel when it comes to punishment. Every time I see a cartel video it has always been either slow-walking a chainsaw execution or dismemberment with a butterknife.
