Culture Hollywood Is Cranking Out Original Movies. Audiences Aren’t Showing Up. - New movies based on fresh ideas are fizzling at the box office

LOS ANGELES—When director Christopher Landon introduced his new thriller, “Drop,” before its premiere at the Chinese Theater on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, he had a warning for the packed auditorium.

“It’s really hard out there for an original movie,” he said, urging everyone who liked the Universal Pictures release to “scream it from the rooftops” and on social media.

“Drop” opened this weekend to an estimated $7.5 million domestically, one of two new movies based on fresh ideas that fizzled at the box office. The other was Disney’s “The Amateur,” a spy thriller adapted from a little-known 1981 book, which opened to an estimated $15 million.

After years of gripes from average moviegoers and Hollywood insiders alike about the seemingly nonstop barrage of sequels, spin offs and adaptations of comic books and toys, the film industry placed more bets on original ideas.

The results have been ugly.

Nearly every movie released by a major studio in the past year based on an original script or a little-known book has been a box-office disappointment. Before this weekend’s flops were Warner Bros. Discovery’s“Mickey 17” and “The Alto Knights,” Paramount’s “Novocaine,” Apple’s “Fly Me to the Moon,” Amazon’s “Red One,” and the independently financed “Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1” and “Megalopolis.”

Jason Blum, who produced “Drop” and built his company Blumhouse largely on original horror franchises, said audiences’ preference for known properties has made it harder to release original movies in theaters, “even though that’s where some of the most exciting and risky storytelling still lives.”

Need for advertising​

Getting people into theaters more frequently is a priority for a movie industry still recovering from the pandemic. Box-office revenue in the first three months of this year in the U.S. and Canada was the lowest it has been, excluding the pandemic, since 1996.

t the CinemaCon industry convention in early April, theater owners said they welcome more original films, but only if they are backed by robust advertising campaigns. Building buzz for a new film in a media environment fractured between YouTube, TikTok, streaming and sports is tough, particularly when it is an unknown title.

“We’re opening films that have almost zero awareness,” said Bill Barstow, president of Main Street Theatres, a small Nebraska-based chain.

Many consumers are content to wait until an original motion picture is available to rent online a few weeks after its theatrical release or to stream on a service like Netflix in a few months.

‘Creating new franchises’​

The only films succeeding in the current environment are those with built-in audiences, like “A Minecraft Movie,” which was released in early April and has grossed more than $280 million domestically. And these days, even franchises can be far from a sure thing. Long-running series such as Marvel and DC superheroes and live-action remakes of Disney animated classics are showing their age and proving unreliable at the box office.

Studios say they have little choice but to make more original movies they hope will buck the odds.

“Telling original stories and taking risks is the only path toward creating new global franchises,” Bill Damaschke, Warner Bros.’ head of animation, said at CinemaCon.

Some of the increase in original film releases is attributable to Amazon and Apple, which are building film businesses with few well-established franchises. One of the biggest bets on an original film from any company this year is Apple’s “F1,” a June release starring Brad Pitt as a race-car driver.

Amazon hyped 11 coming movies to exhibitors at CinemaCon, of which six were originals. Among traditional studios, Warner Bros. is taking the most risks on originals, with big budget films from directors Paul Thomas Anderson and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Hollywood’s next original release comes Friday with Warner’s “Sinners,” a horror movie starring Michael B. Jordan. Next month even Marvel, home to Hollywood’s biggest franchises, is taking a gamble with “Thunderbolts,” about a super team brand new to all but the most devoted comic-book readers.

I've never heard of any of the movies mentioned here besides the Minecraft one. I think part of the dynamic is that marketing has been a black hole for money for a long time. Studios throw money into marketing, and there is no way to gauge the relationship between what they put in and what they got out, so nobody who works in marketing is ever held accountable for a flop. Even when the problem is you never heard of half this shit

Step Two is rebuilding. After nearly two decades of nostalgiabait dross, you have to give audiences a reason to come back. Trust and patronage are earned, not given.

Novocaine (known as Novocaine No Pain in some regions) is a 2025 American action comedy film directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen and written by Lars Jacobson. The film stars Jack Quaid, Amber Midthunder, Ray Nicholson, Betty Gabriel, Matt Walsh, and Jacob Batalon. Its plot follows Nathan Caine (Quaid), a bank employee with the inability to feel pain who goes out to rescue his co-worker (Midthunder) after she is taken hostage by a group of bank robbers.

Yep. I don't think I'll ever trust Hollywood again. Even when I'm interested in a premise, I'll usually hold out until the audience score comes in. Even if the numbers look great, I'll still go into the movie with trepidation, just waiting for some form of anti white/male/straight propaganda. And it's almost always there, even now.

I watch maybe one new movie a year at this point.
 
I saw Red One. I've seen a lot fucking worse, particularly in the 'family Christmas movie' genre. I just feel like a lot of stuff released in the last year or so hasn't appealed to me, and I have one of those gay "go as many times as you want" cinema passes and love films. Including wanky and difficult ones, so it's not that. There's just... there's a lot of low-to-low-middlebrow stuff which is neither lowbrow enough to be funny and enjoyable and not actually smart or interesting enough to be interesting. There's also far, far, FAR too many 'relationship dramas'. Lot of middle aged divorcees making films about being middle aged divorcees. (Not Marriage Story. Marriage Story was awesome. But success breeds imitation and we don't need any more Temu versions.)

I distinctly remember when everyone was talking about that new Batman movie (I think this was ~5 years ago). It looked almost like a Michael Mann joint or something so I checked it out. Two hours in Catwoman takes Batman up on the roof and complains about white men to him. It was so out of left field that it was like they had to include that in the script somewhere to get funded.
 
Can't imagine why people don't want to see one of the 3 varities of goyslop avalible at the movies:

-Capeshit about niggers and women being Mary Sues.
-Degen shit about nihilism where the goal is to be the most depraved.
-"Romance" where a 50 year old married white woman is blacked by a 20 year old.

Honesty with these 3 original flavors of slop, the goys not coming out is honestly antisemitic at this point. Soros paid a lot of money to get his fetishes in the media, how can you reject him like this?

Novocaine has a decent premise for an action flick but no one really likes Jack Quaid. I think he's a decent actor but he has that soy look plus he's a nepobaby. Every other original IP has been dogshit. Here's an idea: make something that isn't completely retarded and an obvious money laundering scheme. It can be a little retarded but not by much.

There is a scene where the guy grabs a gun in a deep fryer. There is no way to suspend that much disbelief. Pain is not just in your head. It is an indication of damage. While not being able to feel damage might help you in like...a fight where someone punches you in the stomach if you submerge your hand in a deep fryer filled with at temperature oil what you are pulling out is not going to be useful.

It's worth an (illegal) download/stream. Better than Love Hurts, which is not saying much. The plot is easy to figure out and there's a dumb redemption arc as well. The black chick from Get Out and one of the guys from the Upright Citizen Brigade have small roles in the film.

Action movies can get away with barely having a plot. 99% of Kung fu movies are either revenge stories, undercover cop infiltrates gang, or its a story about a tournament. It's the execution that matters most. Pun intended.

The fuck are you complaining about? BlumHouse produced profitable movie after profitable movie for the past decade and a half and single handedly ushered the horror genre into a new Renaissance in the 2010s. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to feel bad for the production company who made Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and the fucking Purge. For Christ sake, these are some of the most profitable movies of the past decade. Not to mention launching the movie careers of Mike Flanagan and Jordan Peele who have both been wildly popular in their own rights. Sure, maybe the past few years haven't been the best for BlumHouse and now they have actual competition but I'm not shedding a tear when MEGAN hit it pretty big and you still have FNAF to fall back on. You faggots have produced literally some of my personal favorite movies like The Gift, The Visit, Oculus, Whiplash. Hell, even Woman In the Yard despite being critically slammed at least got some people TALKING about it, including me. Sure it's not a great movie or arguably even a good one, but I can at least say that I'd recommend it for nothing else how ridiculously mean spirited it is. Piss off. You have Megan 2 coming out this year, an original IP made by you guys, that's guaranteed to probably make money.

Bottom line is, Hollywood is dead. They made their own competition with streaming. Streaming killed what was left of the movie theaters. It's not like good ideas don't exist. They're just gate kept by Hollywood fuckwads who won't touch their ideas because they don't like them. There are no new celebrities. Political pandering destroyed their societal power. What's left for Hollywood to actually do? They have nothing left in them. Now production is divorcing from California and spreading out all over the country. Hollywood is straight up dead.

Whenever you wonder "How the hell does Marketing keep getting away with this" just remember that the entire point of their job and existence is to sell people on giving them money. Whether they're leveraging that power to convince people to give their employers money, or leveraging it to convince the employers they deserve a raise/did well is irrelevant, same skillset.

We let the people who specialize in making shit look like gold run everything, really shouldn't be a surprise how we got here.
