JRPG General - Video games were never meant to be shorter than 50 hours.

I gave Cyber Sleuth another try on PC after playing a little bit on the Vita years ago. Really solid game and one of the better creature collection games I've played. End game gets ridiculous with how much exp you can get from single fights if you have the right stuff, I was hitting 150k which gets you to level 50 in one go basically. Very simple and addictive to be able to build out any digimon you want. Would definitely recommend to give it a shot.
I'm gonna give that another go at some point. I liked what I played but it was pretty slow.

Finished Community Pom as well. Very very odd PSX 2D zelda-like with town raising elements. The game has a a very charming sense of humor and never takes itself seriously whatsoever minus a handful of moments. The dungeons are also pretty fun too, though some of them absolutely require you to know what Poms you need beforehand. There are also zero guides online so good luck to any completionists who wish to play this game without getting an aneurysm from all of the timed deadlines.

Also I have to say this again but the OST is probably my favorite part of this game. They experimented with it a lot and minus a couple of stinkers, I'd say it was a success. Also the ending theme samples Earth Wind and Fire(?) which legitimately got me when I finished the game. Apparently the guy went to do some obscure weirdo PS2 game called Katamari Damacy? I might have to give that game a try as well...

Also whoever's idea it was to have the battle theme change based on the state of battle was a literal genius and I hope Sega didn't fuck them over too hard when the game didn't sell as well. When the final boss's theme changed to a positive version of the main theme I kneeled. Music goes a long way in JRPGs and it can completely sell a game no matter how basic the gameplay might be.
It's not the first time Sega has tried something like this. Phantasy Star 3 had a system where the battle theme would change depending on whether you were winning, losing, or if it was currently a toss-up. So it's interesting to hear that Sega revisited this concept in a much more fleshed-out capacity. I hear a lot of good things about Skies of Arcadia, so I might check it out some day.

While I'm on the subject of Phantasy Star 3 and cool things it does with music, it also had the really cool idea of having the overworld theme gain more instruments and grow in complexity as you recruited more party-members, so when you're all by yourself it sounds very barebones. Gain a second party member, and the melody becomes a duet. Gain a third, there's now an additional melody in that background. Gain a fourth, yet another melody. Gain your fifth and final member, and they'd finally layer on the percussion to make it sound like you're truly on an epic adventure.

Funnily enough there's a lot more of Phantasy Star 3's DNA in Skies of Arcadia then one would think. Apparently the final boss theme in Arcadia is a remix of one of the ending themes in Phantasy Star 3. The layered overworld themes were also a thing that Arcadia did, where depending on where in the overworld you were, the instruments used would change. It's mostly because Reiko Kodama worked on both games and liked the ideas from PS3 so much that she brought them into Arcadia.

The overworld theme changing depending on the number of party members is a very cool concept too! Really really wish more JRPGs did things involving music. The closest thing I can think of is Mother 3 where certain party members had certain instruments associated with their attacks.

So the Lunar Collection uses the Working Designs translation. I personally love this because it makes the game funnier if I'm being honest. But a lot of people are furious that it was not retranslated. I heard whispering of some licensing and or legal issues preventing a retranslation (or something to do with the original voice cast?)

@Lifeguard Hermit are you a fan of the translation?

Yes if that's the original translation, I also noticed after doing some digging that they are infact releasing it on steam,

You'll know how much effort they put into remastering the game if you get through the Gypsy fight scene or magic Mansion without having to restart like 2 hours of gameplay to grind a little bit. Lol

Is it free of censorship?

Looking at the RPGSite review, apparently the difficulty is based off of the Japanese difficulty as opposed to the Working Designs difficulty, whatever that might entail. I am glad the remaster has dual audio as there is currently no available undub patch for Lunar 2 at the current moment. I will say the bloom and most of the "remastered" features look butt ugly.

Japanese difficulty
This actually is a very good thing:
As with many of their other games, Working Designs went to some lengths to make Eternal Blue more difficult (and more frustrating).

Found a little less than halfway through this page:
From what I can tell that means that we will no longer have to pay donations higher than 100 bucks at some of the statues to pray, some of the items base prices should be a lot lower, you shouldn't have to use MP to pray (I don't remember having to do that I must have had like a version 1.1 or something), and a bunch of the spells have had their MP usage reduced if it's in fact the Japanese difficulty.

It also looks like a bunch of other localization nonsense they did like removing pixel nudity would be undone, and the enemies stats are all reduced. So that means my concern about the Gypsy battle and the magic Mansion would be addressed. Mostly because even though you get to visit a town prior to both of those you also have a lengthy amount of gameplay before those boss battles which are random AF to a new player.

I'd love a jrpg where I can outlevel bosses. You know like pokemon, your starter is weak against the first gym, so instead of leveling other pokemon you just give your starter 12 more levels and bruteforce it. JRPGs? Nah you need to figure out some wacky-ass puzzle to be given Wackamama+9 that'll work with some niche buff to one-shot the boss.

Every single jrpg. Yet to see one, ironically outside pokemon-likes, where you can just outlevel any difficulties.

I don't know what JRPGs you're playing but a lot of them you just end up overleveled by just doing enough of the side content. The SMT/Persona series could also work too as being comedically overleveled is something that can very easily happen, especially in entries like Persona 5 where if you do one of the social links, you can just fuse personas that are higher level than you.

Persona 5 is also really weird in that the highest difficulty is also kind of easier because shit takes 3X damage from weakness instead of 2 so outside of bosses you can just basically one shot almost everything.

To answer your question yes it does appear that the game is going to be free of censorship if they are using the original localization. I wouldn't however be surprised if they remove two very specific jokes that directly reference sexual assault. Or a specific scatological joke that barely rhymes.

That's too bad. Guess I'll see how it plays out. I never played the 2nd one, but I liked the first a lot on PSP.

Anyone getting the Lunar remaster that's coming out in a few days? I want to get it on Switch. I heard they are selling it exclusively on Amazon which is BS because it means I have to use Amazon to get a game. I usually just get them GameStop or Best Buy. Also my account on Amazon is still fucjked because I signed in with my phone and Amazon thinks someone hacked my account. It's a pain in the ass trying to get the street shitter curry niggers to restore it.

I hear they're recycling the Working Designs script, so it's a no-go for me.

It has been twenty years since Working Designs went under and the ghost of Victor Ireland still haunts us.

Finding out that they're reusing the WD script kills a lot of my enthusiasm. If I wanted to play WD Lunar, I'd just play WD Lunar. You can emulate it on a toaster nowadays.

The problem with retranslating Lunar is it would be impossible to please everyone.

Just reusing the WD translation with no content removals is without a doubt the easiest option.
