The server was running FreeBSD 10.1. You can't just take the 4chan software and drop it on top of a modern OS. It's going to take work just to get it working on something modern. THEN you have to go through and fix all exploits people will now be able to dig up since they have the source.
If they didn't even have the people to keep the site up to date they sure as shit don't have the people on hand to do all that.

The only way it safely comes back in a week is if they just start over from scratch and just run vichan.
