Myth was a true lightning-in-a-bottle moment. The right girls coming in at *the* perfect possible time while everyone was cooped up inside all day every day. Zero chance any of them was prepared for the sudden and fucking massive boost in numbers. Even for a normal streamer steadily growing their audience over a decade like Asmongold or Hasan or xqc, looking at your stats, seeing those numbers, realizing "those are thousands/tens of thousands of people looking at me" and not having some kind of panic attack just requires they be built different.

In retrospect it's not surprising at least one of them decided they couldn't handle it.

Within vtubing, "like Mel Blanc permanently leaving Warner Brothers circa 1945" is how I've been describing this to a couple of normies who have asked. They got it.

None of the existing talent is going to be able to just slide into the gaping void being left.
they're not normies if they get a mel blanc reference.

Honestly I don't think gura truly "broke into the mainstream" though cover was definitely pushing to get it there.
When I see claims like that, I usually assume they're coming from a place of 'They made it out of just the vtubing sphere'. Gura was all over the place at cons even if people barely watched (or didn't watch at all) her or anyone else in Holo. People knew the name, knew some memes, and liked the design inside the anime-sphere of the EN market. Japan will always seem and technically be bigger for vtubers because anime is just more culturally ingrained and that means vtubers as an offshoot will also be the same. While anime has grown in the west as you can find random people who picked up all the shonen stuff in the Covid anime boom, the general acceptance is still pretty low outside of that one genre.
I don't subscribe to the dogs because after 5-10 minutes of them alone, I've had enough. They're better in collabs and small clip doses.

It's too bad that they stayed so dedicated to being in-character as FWMC. I bet slowly turning the baby voices and BAUBAU down over the course of 18 or so months would've let them both keep their core autist fanbase, and made it easier to bring new fans in.

Two autistic twins with pleasant normal voices, who have regularly demonstrated a sly sense of humor, and are fans of pro wrestling, old anime, and old video games, and have done quality control on porn games would probably make for a pretty entertaining duo if they were *ahem* let off the leash a little.
Sad part is, as someone who really doesn't mind the vocal ticks and other stuff that would turn most people away, I'm sad to see that they don't lean harder into the old anime, old video games, and VN stuff. Inconstancy is rough, and they don't really talk about something unless it's 'on topic', which means rarely. It may be a portion of the leashing thing which could be them or Cover or both, but I can get more of them talking about random VN via the old GGN streams than their entire career in Holo both because they were playing them. Everything as FuwaMoco is shrouded in a layer of vagueness, and they rarely actually come out and straight talk about things like old VN or anime.

I'm hoping the gura graduation thing wakes cover up a bit from whatever they are doing that's causing so many graduations in such a short span.
Can’t really do anything. It’s a Graduation Queue and probably all happened because 24 renewals were up. What they are doing is it is no longer covid and the girls can’t hide in their rooms anymore.

Calli said yesterday that after Gura, there would be peace, those that left (besides Fauna) had already checked out since 2022. I don't really see anyone else leaving, but it will take months to rebuild.

Makes sense. Poor Gura. It’s clear it broke her and she never really was able to get to a point where she could cope. And with Ame leaving she was not long for the job. It’s clear Ame helped her through a lot of shit. And with all the other girls in Japan you’ve got Gura stuck pretty much on her own. And I think it is ok to say she does not really handle that well.

Meh, Suburu driving, reddit/insta users who are into craft IPAs, yoga and organic gardening. That's about as normie as you can get under age 40. Most normie redditors are going to get a Mel Blanc/WB/Loony Toons reference if they are over ~30.

JP already has the mascot problem covered with PekoMiko, everything Pekora-related sells like hotcakes and Miko is on the ambassadorship, they're arguably even more popular than Suisei despite Suisei breaking into the mainstream.

The problem is EN. While there are massive merch sellers, they will not break into the mainstream the same way Gura did, they have too much filters. FWMC's baby-ish voices and general maternal-like attitudes are a major deterrent for a lot of people.

And it's pretty weird, because even ID has it's mascot (Kobo), but EN now has none.
I concur especially about the dogs and their voices because they sound like what somebody outside of the culture would assume your average female anime character sounds like.

@Sunflower Samurai I don't think this spells the end of cover or anything, but I do think that the ruptures from this is going to be felt for a good while IMHO.

The shark at least in my own personal circles, but sort of a catch-all term for English vtubing whenever people would talk about it.

I've talked about this before, but I've even heard people at Disney comment on her success and using that as a merit to pimp out their own characters as vtubers and they're testing that out at the parks right now.

From a media perspective, this feels like Nintendo’s Ruby and Sapphire era. Still successful, still printing money, but nowhere near the cultural domination of Pokémon Red/Blue or Gold/Silver. People moved on. The hype cooled.

I'm glad there's another animation aficionado on the board lol

It's pretty telling that it's taken over 30 something voice actors to replace one man

Man watching Twitter etc and they really don’t understand the concept of a boilerplate response ‘disagreement with management about direction’ is common if you have to publicly give reason. It is frequently called ‘creative differences’ over here.

Have the people on Twitter and Reddit never known anyone in a job.

Cover is clearly going ‘disagreement and direction’ so they can tank the blow back.

Managers know the kind of abuse these girls get, they are the people that read most of it.

People blame Cover going public as the reason for the graduations don't know anything about the sheer suffering that the girls had to gone through in 2022, a year in which the company was private. The graduation route for all 5 girls started in mid 2022, it's a miracle that they lasted until 2025.
