General Discussion for Virtual Youtubers / Vtubers / Chuubas - it's okay to be a simp for 2D, just don't thirstpost.

whats funny is two talents have hinted at real issues within cover but they still hold back their tongue.
its ex holostar talents so it could just be the stars side being awful.
I think why we never hear anything from ex hololive talents is they hire the type that would not start drama. Many talents have talked about how cover does big background checks on people to make sure they wont start shit with other talents or the corpo its self. Also cover most likely has contracts that aren't jokes like niji and many other smaller corpos.

I haven’t really said much until now, but this whole situation is... complicated. Like, really complicated. And honestly? The ones I feel for the most are the talents still left at Cover.

Forget the PR spin—they have to know how this looks from the outside. This wasn’t just a graduation. This was losing your biggest name. Your flagship. The one person even normies knew. I had friends who don’t watch VTubers at all messaging me about it. That doesn’t happen unless someone had legit cultural pull. No offense, but if any of the others announced they were leaving, it wouldn’t hit the same. Not even close.

And coming from someone who works in animation and games? Characters like this—the Bugs Bunnies, the SpongeBobs, the Pikachus—they’re happy accidents. You can’t force that kind of iconography. You can’t build it in a lab. It just happens. And the second you try to replicate it—make the next "shark," the next big cute mascot—it falls flat 9 out of 10 times.

So no, I don’t think Marine, the dogs, or whoever else they try to push next is going to fill that void. It’s not even about talent—it’s about timing, uniqueness, and feeling. And the Shark had that in spades. You can't fake that kind of magic.

I’m not here to drag Cover. This has been a long time coming, and I get that. These things happen. But let’s be real: this is going to hurt. Way more than some people are admitting. Internally, I wouldn’t be surprised if morale is scraping the bottom of the barrel.

And yeah, I do think this is the start of a domino effect— not just within Holo, but the corporate sphere as a whole.

That's going to be lost on deaf ears most people here are pretty apathetic towards the Stars.

JP already has the mascot problem covered with PekoMiko, everything Pekora-related sells like hotcakes and Miko is on the ambassadorship, they're arguably even more popular than Suisei despite Suisei breaking into the mainstream.

The problem is EN. While there are massive merch sellers, they will not break into the mainstream the same way Gura did, they have too much filters. FWMC's baby-ish voices and general maternal-like attitudes are a major deterrent for a lot of people.

And it's pretty weird, because even ID has it's mascot (Kobo), but EN now has none.

I think cover will recover eventually, Gura was a pretty extensive face, but every other talent has been building up extensive fanbases that carved out their own little niche that still profitable and marketable as fuck. I think people are just retardedly thinking this was something entirely within Cover's fault when arguably, Fauna's was the most damning towards Cover's own image. Also, lets face it, Japan will be the greatest saftey net for Cover and they can still coast much more easily if that market is still stable.

I honestly dislike this wierd narrative that everyone besides Fauna left out of the blue, Shion was someone who was in constant hiatus and admitted her mental was not up to streaming, Chloe had heavy health issues, Ame had heavy personal issues, and Gura had long struggled with the idea of being the face of HololiveEN and there wouldnt have been anything they could do short of forcing her to stay unless he did a complete and utter 180 of her own personality or got extensive therapy. Aqua's was also a bit mixed, but considering she has just mellowed out, i wouldnt be surprised if she just wanted an out from being in a big corpo

Honestly I don't think gura truly "broke into the mainstream" though cover was definitely pushing to get it there.

I don't think vtubing on the whole has broken into the mainstream quite yet in the west. Like yeah we had the dodgers event, and it was a success because holofans came out in droves to support it and buy the merch from it. The average sports fan or dodgers fan still didn't (and probably still doesn't) know who gura is or what vtubing is. it was just a weird moment of "what's t his cartoon girl got to do with baseball" and then moved on from.

Vtubing is starting to push more and more into the mainstream sphere but even in gura, we've yet to have a talent there that was both big enough, and actually had the drive to make that push. (which is not a dig at gura just an acknowledgement that with her own issues coping with the spotlight she had on her, she was not built to be the one smashing down barriers into more mainstream attention in the west the way Suisei is driven to do so in Japan)

What about her streaming to a much larger audience earlier into holo career? Why ignore that?
No one is ignoring that. Talents talked often about how much pressure Gura felt at that time and how cripplingly shy she was.

Ame and Gura’s last stream together was 3/4 Ame reassuring Gura that she did great, she has come a long way and she was way better than when they started and that she’ll be fine. And Gura just thanking her for everything.

Within vtubing, "like Mel Blanc permanently leaving Warner Brothers circa 1945" is how I've been describing this to a couple of normies who have asked. They got it.

None of the existing talent is going to be able to just slide into the gaping void being left.

Like how is a business like hololive even sustainable when your burning through IP like it currently is? How much capital, reach, etc was burned just now ? You would think that keeping the IP alive even if they just stream once every other year would be worth it. Do the girls make yearly salaries or is it just percent of everything they bring in ?

I place my chips on the Diamond Dogs (Bijou + FWMC), instead of having one massive megastar that is supposed to both sell merch and provide entertainment on stream, divide the labour into two (or well, three)

Have FWMC be the massive merch sellers and the ones that appear on TV and movies and songs and shit, and have Bijou be the funny quirky girl that always says funny things on stream and that is capable of creating a sort of meme culture based around her.

They’d clearly been doing that for some time but you can’t keep doing that if the Talent wants out.

They get a salary on top of a percentage cut.

tbf no one could've predicted how big this all became.
Least of all the talents themselves, I think folks often forget how Myth didn't expect much to come of their debuts not sure how people would ever even accept English members of Hololive.

Only for Myth to experience likely the most explosive growth and rise to stardom of any generation of the company that shot them up so high so fast that it was even making JP gen 5 members like Lamy disheartened and like she wasn't good enough.

And I think Gura is pretty much the perfect storm poster child of "she was not ready for this level of attention" and she got to that level almost immediately upon debut.

And shot past that level a few months after.

Which is fine ish as long as you are stuck inside due to covid but when you aren’t…it is no wonder she started dipping at that exact point.

All the Myth Girls at one point talked about Gura’s super stardom making them feel bad.

You’ve got the quietest, meekest girl on the planet making everyone feel like shit on accident by existing, that will do a number on anyone.

FWMC's baby-ish voices and general maternal-like attitudes are a major deterrent for a lot of people.
I don't subscribe to the dogs because after 5-10 minutes of them alone, I've had enough. They're better in collabs and small clip doses.

It's too bad that they stayed so dedicated to being in-character as FWMC. I bet slowly turning the baby voices and BAUBAU down over the course of 18 or so months would've let them both keep their core autist fanbase, and made it easier to bring new fans in.

Autistic twins with pleasant normal voices, who have regularly demonstrated a sly sense of humor, and are fans of pro wrestling, old anime, and old video games, and have done quality control on porn games would probably make for a pretty entertaining duo if they were *ahem* let off the leash a little.
