Nick can never take back the infamous Dear John rant, but he could have apologized. Even if he didn't mean it, with his plea he had an opportunity to say something like "I was really fucked up on drugs, I barely remember what I said and the Nick that said those things isn't me, and that's not who I want to be anymore." Instead, Nick doubles down and says that he still means everything he said. What a slimy disgusting worm.
Too add on to this discussion, a lot has to be said I think for the fact that Richards (and his associate who I forget the name of, shaved head guy) were local attorneys, and that even if they were 'small time local lawyers' that could have given them an advantage where they know the local juror pool, they know the judge, and they know how best to present arguments in court for the local judiciary.

A recent actually good one was the judge delivering his verdict in the Mitchell v. Jobst thing. I was actually impressed at the same time as being humiliated for having bought Jobst's lies about the case, as the judge basically delivered a full explanation of "if you believed this jackass this is why you're a retard."
