This is very true. I didn't even factor in taxes, just inflation. I know the usual response to deflation is "lol, prices go down, what's the catch" but in truth, the whole system works on the assumption that "line must always go up" so when prices go down, everything else has to go down (this includes wages, savings and investment). When the line goes up you can create a system where purchasing power catches up with prices (even if the markets are fucked up beyond belief and the middle class is eroding at break-neck speed) so there is a plan. If the prices go down it's pure chaos because at some point everyones wages will have to be garnished and everyone's pension funds will have to be drained to account for the economy.

Why derail the thread with yarmulke economics? Because Bob's career is an example of a downward spiral. By all metrics he is poorer and with worse prospects compared to 10 years ago.
