Haven't watched more than a little of the Stevie videos but he mentioned DKA in one. That's Diabetic Ketoacidosis. If a 5 year old presents with DKA, you bet the hospital has an obligation to hold the kid until the cause has been established (it's usually missed insulin doses - and 5 year olds don't generally control their own insulin dosing) and their condition has been stabilised. It's a condition which can be fatal and considerable organ and nerve damage can result from an episode.

I'm also curious about why the parents initially agreed to a 30 day "therapeutic separation" - something which hospitals only request when they believe a child's medical issues are caused by abuse or neglect on the part of the caregivers.

Regardless of this kid's "gender identity", it sounds like there were reasons for the hospital to hold them and to involve CPS.

Edit : Further research shows that the mother is suspected of medical abuse (including demanding inappropriate, invasive treatments). The parents side of the story is second and third hand, coming through "friends" who weren't witnesses to the events they're reporting.
