I would say it depends on what part of Melbourne. The more Liberal voting suburbs in the East are firmly against it, however in the South East, people are generally in favour of more immigration, even in the rich suburbs like Brighton and Sandringham. "More immigrants because of the plummetting birthrate" is a popular slogan in these parts. I don't know how people say that and don't think for 2 seconds what implications that has.
Mate I'm from the same era. We grew up with a strong culture and national pride in the northern suburbs of Brisbane. I didn't lose my optimism until I lived in Melbourne mid 2010s. Some parts of rural Australia are still alive and well. The key is strengthening local communities and growing small scale fabrication. Localisation = resilience. Move somewhere with a dairy.

I'm in the northern suburbs of Brisbane, and to be honest I've mainly seen them in the CBD and southside. It seems northside costs too much for them to be able to live up here, and southside is quite cheap thanks to the crappy houses and its shitty reputation.
