As you all know, the Pope is kill.

Meaning that the conclave will be starting sometime between May 6th and May 12th. Per the Wikipedia page there are 135 eligible cardinals, a plurality of which are from Europe. To be selected one needs to win 2/3 of the vote, in this particular instance they would need 90 cardinals to vote for them.

When Francis was elected it took 5 ballots, Benedict XVI took 4 ballots, and John Paul II took 8 ballots. It will probably be within that ballpark figure this time around and will probably occur of the course of 2-4 days. During that time there will be livestreams of the chimney to check the color of the smoke.

Stuff like this doesn't usually get opinion polls but there is a way to check who is likely to succeed Francis. Sports book sites are already posting betting odds on a successor.

So as it stands now it looks like it'll either be Tagle or Parolin. Barring an upset victory for Virginia's own Jesus Christine Weston Chandler Sonichu.

By design. The Curia doesn't want a Pope in charge for too long. They tend to pick someone who they expect will live at least 10 years and no more then 20. If they can't make a decision, they will pick the most decrepit, sickest one among them and come back in a few years to try again.
