Him trying was nice as opposed to now where he feels comfortable enough he thinks he's the cool kid on the block and doesn't need to try, but also he's comfortable enough that it doesn't feel so hamfisted.

I remember the conspiracy during that time, that Lyle and his gf were editing out jokes and comments by the other cast members to make room for more Lyle jokes and stories. On the basis that funny=true I 100% believe it.
