I agree. When I first heard Barnes say "treason is in their blood" that I realized that he clearly has no idea what "treason" is. Treason is actually quite a serious crime, punishable by death, and it's apparently so serious that it's the only crime specified in The United States Constitution. It's seriously so frustrating I have friends who follow these people and I just don't understand it. Every time they mention one of their opinions at i feel like i need a shot just to keep quiet. I mean honestly have they even looked into what these people actually believe in because it's completely embarrassing.
Specifically, Article III, Section 3, Clause 1 states, "Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court."
The crime of treason (in addition to the currently applicable punishment for treason) was subsequently codified by The United States Congress, and it can be found in The United States Code (Title 18, Part I, Chapter 115, Section 2381, available at https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?path=/prelim@title18/part1/chapter115&edition=prelim). This statute states:
"Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States. (June 25, 1948, ch. 645, 62 Stat. 807; Pub. L. 103–322, title XXXIII, § 330016(2)(J), Sept. 13, 1994, 108 Stat. 2148.)"
Barnes disappoints me. In addition to apparently not having read The United States Constitution (Article III, Section 3, Clause 1) or The United States Code (18 U.S.C. 2381) Barnes also apparently never heard of a quote that's often attributed to President Abraham Lincoln:
