This phrase, "turn neither to the right nor the left" is repeated at least fifty times, from what I've read. They repeated this phrase so often for a reason.
There are also several warnings about not swearing blood oaths to people.

Those who follow the narrow road may or may not be rewarded, but if anyone could potentially get their just rewards it will be those of the narrow path.
