Back in the 70's, people would still be prescribed alcohol if they had an issue with blood clotting. They can't do that any more. There's been some very limited research in the UK into the use of alcohol to manage withdrawal in in-patient detox, but it's not common place. They generally use librium to manage alcohol withdrawal.

Fortunately, it's always available over the counter for a small sum at a supermarket near you.
