Do you guys really think it'll never come back? I'd actually cry. I really need my friends rightnow
I think it’ll be back in some form.
They may have to change software and start over. I don’t think anyone would care that much.
They’ll make new threads.

Everything was temporary and gets purged anyway so they don’t have the same nightmare Josh does here of preserving everyone’s shit from day one.

But that’s a good thing. It keeps their footprint under a terabyte and I don’t want to wade through a 2018 thread nobody’s responded to in 6 months anyway.

Ps: I was kidding, I didn’t mean to actually turn this into a Fuentes thread :D

OTOH if the alternatives didn’t suck ass, or could scale, 4chan would have been kill a decade ago.

I'm praying and hoping to God it'll come back. Just for a little while at least. so I can say bye to everyone
the current staff who own 4chan are incapable of bringing it back online
Nightmare scenario

My togies :^(((((

it's embarrassing and i think intentional at this point
the server hasn't been maintained for ten years. Nobody touched the operating system or essential packages since Moot sold it in 2015. The server is unfixably fucked. I would not be able to fix it myself. It's a total loss

it's a simple site. they could get a new refreshed version working in a couple days. it has to be intentional

it's not a simple site. It serves a shit ton of traffic and processes payments

Josh could get a replacement online, if he had cloudflare available. I highly doubt even he could get the original codebase online.

Even Graf could not get it online.

I'm impressed it managed to be more shit than SA, which will probably be the next unfixably fucked site to die.

All it would have taken was literally ONE competent person to keep this from happening.

What you have here is that the underlying software was abandonware as of 2012 and won’t run on php without some modification to change mysql calls to mysqli.

And the problem with doing THAT, is that mysqli is deprecated here , 10 years later , and they’ll just have the same situation when php8 is obsolete and unpatched anyway. (It’s already dropped but some people have still forced the issue in 8.x)

So while I think you can port it to a current OS and LAMP stack , this is the end of the line and it’s a time sink that would postpone the inevitable and we’d just be here again with shit they’re afraid to patch for vulnerabilities. Because now this code REALLY can’t be brought forward (beyond what we have in place today) without a total rewrite.

I would say that “I could” but that’s the problem everyone including me would have with it. The best case scenario here is that doing this might give them a year or two or three to rewrite it all clean.

[that I cannot do. However, porting your obsolete shit that’s older than I even am, is what I do.. I’m toying with the idea of taking a stab at it and just anonymously publishing it on a clean GitHub]

(Then this would be out of my wheelhouse but maybe a third party could just re implement or port the sql module that’s been dropped. I have an idea of how such a thing might work, if this outage is terribly protracted I might fuck around with it? I don’t care if they’re reading this thread, have a hint: just give the module its original fucking function names , which they renamed to try to force people to rewrite their shit, and compile that.)

true but they could handle the other shit and get something better than a 503 on their site
but how? 4chan can't be brought online in its current state. It would be instantly hacked. It must run on a 10 year old operating system on 10 year old libraries. It cannot run on anything else

all they would be able to do would be to bring up a copy of some open-source chan software which would instantly fall over due to traffic

What's really sad in all of this is that now we know what would happen if 4chan went down for good.
No tidal wave of autism and degeneracy across the internet, no stand alone complex of activated sleeper cells.
Instead literally fucking nothing happens as if nothing ever did, because nothing ever does.
