Key words: "if it's federated"

That is only one approach to the problem and it doesn't solve much (or only solves the narrow problem that this Discord bot fixes, which is communities being infiltrated by pedophiles) - "I blocked the guy trading pedophile images" doesn't actually stop them from existing or being able to do things like gather, having economic/transactional means etc. You also currently have the benefit that these people essentially operate in a way that is very out in the open which makes a blocklist/bot feasible.

The way systems are designed carries a lot of weight on how effective moderation can be and there are many iterations out there that don't involve federation or where it isn't of much consequence. I even saw a basic proof of concept the other day that had a rather innovative way of dealing with identities.

Can you build another one in a different language perhaps? How different of a permutation does the bot have to be before it's considered unique from the current iteration of Ro-Cleaner? My thinking is if you can create a wide enough variety of this bot, it would become an impossible game of whack-a-mole for Discord to get rid of it.

Rewriting in a different language won't matter. It's not as easy for a bunch of different bot instances to become widespread because people are lazy and there is more friction in starting a new instance rather than just adding the bot to your server. There is even more effort involved in creating slightly different permutations, which are also easily detected. Discord also has anti-spam protections against mass creation of bot accounts. They could easily flag and ban any bot that has ban lists like Ro-Cleaner.

"Just asking questions" is a typical pedophile tactic. But I'll humor you on the off chance you aren't JAQing off. Yes, they can create alts but pedophiles are lazy and most of them won't. They are caught all the time grooming children on main. Hell, this site even tells you to use a different username when signing up and we still have a lot of easily outed pedos who get caught because they use the same username everywhere.

Reminds me how after Musk bought twitter and fired the entire "safety team" they threw a fit about how unsafe that would make twitter, pedophiles would run rampant, a bot can't do their job because they "manually check every reported user and post"

And then within two weeks there was a statistically noticeable drop in that content, with some of the posts and users that had been up FOR YEARS suddenly banned.


It's almost like ANYTHING else, let alone even "literally nothing", would do a better job than pedophiles guarding pedophiles...

I don't think this is very true. Discord user accounts are low value because they're not tied to real world identifiers usually and people don't use their Discord account to apply for a bank loan or whatever. I mean sure there is the possibility that someone out there thinks the user data is valuable, but its not.

Discord can (and is starting to) leverage its giant captive userbase for advertising and marketing and by doing partnership deals with other relevant companies (Sony/Microsoft). They're even forcing their advertisements onto paying users and will continue to do so because companies will pay hand over fist for access to zoomer demographics.

Outside of marketing video game slop and shit like funko pops to people the userdata at Discord carries very little market value.
