For every 1 person you manage to successfully disprove or call out, showing what issues lay within the community, there will be 10 others that will accuse you of cherry picking and saying "we never said that, you're making this up". When an individual holds contradictory beliefs, that person can be rightfully called out as hypocritical or even schizophrenic. When a group of people hold contradictory beliefs, that's divergence of opinion between different people. This allows online groups (all be it nerd fanbases or political groups) to act in highly eclectic and erratic ways.

Let's say you're part of group B and you witness group A have nearly all of its people agree with you that "murdering random people on the street is bad". But then, tomorrow morning, one of the members of group A, shoots a pedestrian, who's part of your group B, in broad daylight on the street. What happens is that all members of group A, that didn't agree with random people being murdered on the street as bad, will start organizing protests for their member to be released on no charge. You naturally get pissed, cause that was your friend or acquaintance that got killed, but once you bring it up to group A that isn't part of the protests, they'll say "well, we don't believe in that, you clearly saw us exclaim that murdering random people is bad, stop making us look like murderers". You are made out as mean and immature, while group A takes absolutely no responsibility for the behavior of their members they disagree with, even if that loud minority ends up defining their public perception and completely ruining their reputation. Everybody is left worse off.

Even worse if tribalism gets involved. In that scenario, you'd see people that yesterday exclaimed how murder is bad being part of the protests. You get frustrated and confused and ask them what made them change their mind so fast. They say "I didn't change my mind, what are you talking about? I obviously still think murder is bad". You press them on why they are here and if they're honest and not come up with some bogus bullshit answer they'll say "The guy in prison is my friend. Regardless of my beliefs, I am obligated to help him, even if he has made a mistake". No matter how much you try to point out how that mindset is bad, they'll still insist on believing what they said yesterday and proceed to tell others among their group how misinformed you are and how close minded your outlook is on group A, that you view them in very brush strokes, unable to consider the nuance of the situation. Doesn't even matter if their group is the reason your friend is dead, no accountability will get taken for people whose opinions the majority disagrees with, but seemingly supports all the way through.
