There's some random reality TV show my spouse watches that follows around CBP people at the Canadian border. At least every other episode has a segment about some idiot who makes a wrong turn on this bridge from the states and heads into the border crossing. The problem is, once you cross onto that bridge, you HAVE to go to the officials at the border and get checked. They always end up arresting some dumbass because he made a wrong turn and had an 1/8th of weed or a gun on him.

At least one such incident has been discussed before on the site.

For those unaware, this particular border crossing was rebuilt some time ago to expand the US plaza. The current system of ramps between the bridge and I-75 in Detroit is now a serpentine maze to navigate compared to what it was before - partly because the bridge owners wanted a second span there that was ultimately rejected. All it takes is one wrong turn or the lack of attention to end up on the ramp connecting to the bridge instead of the roads leading to and from Detroit's Mexican Town area. Worse, once one goes on the ramp to the bridge, there's no, "Oops, I made a wrong turn, let me go back," option.

In short, it's easy to make a wrong turn and end up on the bridge if one doesn't pay attention or - in the case of illegals who don't understand English - doesn't read or understand the signage that warns that the ramp has no option for remaining in the US. Both citizens and foreign nationals alike have ended up in this predicament; the Detroit newspapers and news stations have covered this multiple times since the current configuration debuted.

The version of the Article I read had one part claiming the Venezuelan had "disappeared" yet another said he was in an El Salvador prison. Which is it? Although he was using the CBP One App to process an asylum claim, who knows if he was here legally or not since the article chose to gloss over that detail. (Link / GhostArchive)

This is a reasonable take. The States are in charge of the voting process, not the Federal government. States should require proof of citizenship, but it should come from the Legislature of said State, not the Feds.

Obama's government declared elections to be part of the nation's essential security infrastructure, putting the management of election security under the DHS. Identification is very basic security. They could try to overturn this, but the downstream consequences would be something worth considering for the security state.

There's this old meme video that I didn't save of some one putting together this disgusting mix of ramen, chips, takis, sauces, cheese, just massive amounts of slop and everyone assumes it's American, but it's Mexican. Payroll Taxes (SS, Medicare, FUTA) are harmful regressive taxes. The first $7,000 of a wage is taxed 21.3%; then 15.3%, but 0% after ≈$175,000. These taxes are made less visible by putting them on the business's accounts and automatic withholdings.

Removing all payroll taxes and replacing them with a 15% national sales tax would be more progressive and reduce income inequality. I say that not because I think sales tax is good (I dislike it actually), but to highlight how horrible the Payroll Taxes currently are.
