There is literally medical grade fent that is made in licensed labs for legitimate pharma use. (There is a little bit of coke that technically exists like that too, but you are never going to see it as a user.) and like @Oxyjen says the better analog would be opium/heroin. Theoretically there are places where that stuff is at least grown by farmers who are free men and just trying to make cash, and the extraction process is literally just "slit pod, receive opium". It's bad but not nearly as bad as coke.

Ty got main character syndrome. He did these 11:59 filing bullshit so it could be like "I worked until the last possible second to make a dramatic play and win the case!" and fucked everything up by being late.

The judge clearly wanted nothing to do with this either and I think he just punted to get eyeballs off of him.

Another big part of that was the surprise filing tactics (and how much that super impresses judges.) But, another angle that often goes unexplored: Ty bills himself as the millionaire's lawyer. It's entirely possible Ty just had bigger fish to fry, with people who draw more water, or people he owes a favor, or people he knows personally.

Maybe he just "didn't have time for" the funny internet anime guy. Which would be another reason Ty was a bad choice and a bad fit.

It's possible this is some 5D chess move by Nick, but personally I don't think so. I've seen similar behaviour before in addicts who have a prescription for something. The way he gets it out early, but then puts it down and is clearly trying (and failing) not to fixate on it to the way he's looking at it until he finally takes it all scream "addict desperately trying to cling to the rules so he can pretend he's not an addict/ doesn't need it".

My dog does this exact same thing when I make her wait to eat a treat. lol
