English is required for coms with ATC but that’s because it’s a standard, and that standard matters far more for Europe than Asia. In Asia, nearly all the planes going into an airport belong to that country. In Europe you have a billion carriers from various countries flying all over the place.

Pilots and crew can communicate in their native languages. It doesn’t affect safety. If you think it does, post some evidence.

English isn’t a particularly special language, it just became the standard because two very powerful countries at different points in history happened to use it. The bigger source of confusion to me is why civil aviation is still standardized on American/British measurements of knots (speed), feet (altitude), miles (distance), etc ever since 1950s.

I can understand knots, as it lines up nicely with nautical miles and latitude/longitude for long range navigation, but feet is more of a mystery to me.

Before 1950s, other countries used kilometers per hour and meters for speed and altitude.
